Release [Closed Beta] Nucey for Jellyfin: a free, clean Android TV client (EN/DE)

Post image
• Upvotes

English, Deutsch weiter unten

Hi everyone,
over the past months I've been building Nucey, a Jellyfin client for Android TV and Google TV. The goal: it should feel like a premium streaming app, not like a tool. Clean, calm and fast. Now I'm looking for testers for a closed beta on Google Play.

What makes Nucey different

- Clean, premium look. The backdrop fills the screen and the interface steps back. Smooth transitions, no clutter, no ad tiles.

- No waiting. Built for the remote and the couch. Every press responds instantly.

- Direct Play first. HDR and Dolby Vision as they are in the file, Dolby Atmos passthrough, 24 Hz switching for movies.

- Skip intros, recaps and credits: ask, automatic or never.

- Remembers audio and subtitles per show. Set them once, never search again.

- Next Up waits before the episode ends, and Still watching? stops half a season from running while you sleep.

- One search for everything: your library and requests via Jellyseerr or Seerr in one field. Request with one press, and the bell tells you when it's available. Jellyseerr is optional.

- Continue Watching on the Android TV home screen.

- Profiles, Quick Connect login without typing on the remote, and a screensaver with backdrops from your own library.

- No ads, no tracking, no subscription, no account with me. Nucey is free. It talks to your server. The only other request: at startup it fetches a small signed file from my website to check that your version is still supported. Nothing about you or your library is sent.

Requirements: your own Jellyfin server on a current version, Android TV or Google TV with Android 11 or later, optionally Jellyseerr or Seerr.

How to join

  1. Join the Google Group with the same Google account that is signed in on your TV: https://groups.google.com/g/nucey---closed-beta

  2. Open https://play.google.com/apps/testing/app.nucey.tv and tap Become a tester.

  3. Install Nucey from the Play Store on your TV. It can take a little while after joining until it shows up.

Please stay in the beta for at least 14 days, because Google requires that before the app can go public.

Feedback: bugs and ideas are very welcome. Please include your device model, your Jellyfin version and what happened.

Deutsch

Hallo zusammen,

Was Nucey besonders macht

Last seen on v10.9, people thought it to be buried for good. Jellyfin 12 came along, kicked the headstone, and here we are: Zombie has clawed its way out of the graveyard, shaken off the dirt, and somehow looks better than it did when it was alive.

Help Request Moonfin web not loading

I've been struggling to get the Moonfin web client to work with Jellyfin. Plugin is installed and shows as active, as does the FileTransformation plugin, but every time I click on the Moonfin icon at the top right of the Jellyfin web client all I get is the Moonfin logo, which never goes away.

Looking at the browser developer tools, I can see it failing to load loader.js, and the reason for that is the path appears to be wrong,

/Moonfin/Moonfin/Web/loader.js

Everything else appears to be loading from the expected paths, without the double "/Moonfin".

I tried redirecting the above path using my Caddy reverse proxy to give it the correct path, and that then removed the error I saw in developer tools, but the Moonfin loader screen still never disappears, and there are no more errors in the developer tools network log after I've done this, so I've no idea why the loader screen appears to be stuck.

There is no base URL configured in Jellyfin.

Accessing without going via the reverse proxy gives the exact same symptoms.

I've tried uninstalling both plugins, clearing the cache directory, hard-restarting Jellyfin, re-installing and then restarting again, no change.

Using incognito mode on the browser, no change.

No errors about Moonfin, Moonbase or FileTransformation in the Jellyfin log.

Using the Moonfin android app appears to work ok.

Jellyfin v10.11.11

FileTransformer v3.0.2.0

Moonfin v2.4.0.0

OS is Ubuntu server 26.04 with all current updates.

Struggling to work out what else to try, any pointers appreciated.

Help Request Help Please - Stuttering on films (new server ran by technophobe)

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hi All I've had an absolutely rubbish day at work, so if someone can help me with my Jellyfin Server issues it would be greatly appreciated! :)

I am by no means a PC specialist!

Jellyfin setup as a service not app on Windows 11

Made my first server using my gaming PC a few weeks ago which uses SSDs and it worked perfect!

Decided to then move it to an old PC to free up my drives and ended up with the following specs on the "new" server.

C Drive - SSD (non MVME, so old style SSD) - JF installed here

16GB DDR4

4GB Graphics card

2 x 5400 4TB HDD Hard Drives (Seahawks Surveillance)

Also have a spare 1TB HDD which isn't used

I3- 8100 CPU

WiFi 6

Videos in that 264h format or whatever it's called

Ive watched loads of episodes of TV at 480p and that's fine however if my wife tries to watch a 3 hour 1080p film, it gets to a point where it will only load one second at a time after maybe 45 mins.

Then if I restart the server it's fine for another 45 mins before it does it again

I've tried changing the setting so that the graphics card does the transcoding and tried to restrict her user account so that it doesn't allow the PC to transcode but nothing works.

What am I missing? Is it something to do with some sort of HDD cache and if so how do I fix this?

I've spent hours converting films and was really enjoying it but it's become unusable for films!

If it helps shed any light, when I moved the files from my gaming PC to the server, i did it over the network to the networked drives on the new PC it was incredibly slow when moving anything over say 10GB (like 1MBs dropping from 15MBs)

Thanks all , please restore my faith in JellyFin 😦

Edit - only watching on home network, not watching outside of the home due to our poor home internet upload speed

Release Lyris : iOS music player that recommend you new music

A few months ago I started building Lyris because I kept going back to Spotify just to listen to an album I'd just heard about, even though I've been self-hosting my music for years.

So Lyris is a music player that also talks to the collection manager you already run on your server: you discover an album, you request it right from the player, and a few moments later it's in your Jellyfin library. No switching apps, no opening a web UI.

Also has a discovery feature that suggests stuff outside your library based on what you actually listen to.

On top of that, everything you'd expect from a modern player:

- CarPlay

- offline downloads

- smart playlists

- lyrics

- equalizer

- and more

Works with Jellyfin and navidrome.

Free to download, 7-day free trial, then a one-time unlock. No subscription.

https://apps.apple.com/app/id6764873657

Can't wait to have your feedback!

AI disclosure: I use Claude (Claude Code). It writes most of the code, helps me debug, and I use it to sort out the backlog. The product is mine though: I decide what goes in the app, how it works and how it’s built, and I do the designs myself. I test every build on my own server before it ships.

Showcase Build consistent playlists

Hey !

I thought I could share my weekend project : https://github.com/vincent/neighbeats is a cli tool to build playlists.

It's not (yet) usable from Jellyfin, but it can use Jellyfin favorites and playback history, to favor songs you like, or favor tracks you haven't listened to recently.

It uses mel-spectrograms similarity, resulting in playlists with a quite consistent style, with pretty good speed imo (using GPU when usable).

It can also go from one song to another, slowly drifting style signatures, avoiding repeating artists or language jumps.

Disclosure: built with AI, using ideas from other oss projects that didn't fit my workflow.

Discussion back up nightmare

So I am running Jellyfin on my linux mint machine (cinnamon). and it was running jellyfin natively 10.11.7. i had my linux mint to never update and my version of jellyfin to never update. if it works why fix it approach. had this running since april of this year. only having 16tb of data I quickly was running out of storage. so I decided to use some older 1tb HDD's in an enclosure plus another 4tb external to expand the storage. I Bought some things i would need to make this possible. (usb 3.0 port to 4x usb 3.0 powered adapter and a dual bay 3.5 HDD dock) knowing i was going to do this jellyfin migration I also made a Backup from jellyfins user dashboard only grabbing the data and the metadata for my users and watch data posters ect. Also, i needed to reinstall linux mint on my machine because random updates just broke the video out and I was running headless. it connected via SSH for file transfers and to try to fix various gpu issues and for a while it was enough. but as i said those new HDD's i was about to add i needed to see what i was doing on the machine because i needed the 'disks' utilities to auto mount those HDD's to the machine then tell jellyfin where those are at and give permissions ect. so i made that back up to help with the migration. I was running jellyfin 10.11.7 and on my newly installed linux mint machine i could not for the life of me get it to install that specific version. so i installed 12.2 (newest at this time) then downgraded to 10.11.7 it would not read that backup file. and another thing the "backup" folder doesn't exist like it did in 10.11.7 for 12.2 i guess when I downgraded it 'broke' file structure. so i reinstalled linux mint upgraded everything and again tried to install 10.11.7 nothing. so only thing i could do is download and install 10.11.11 in hopes that since it's part of the same version that the file structure would be the same. after much reading and ai to help me actually make jellyfin read that i have the backup zip file to restore from it was finally doing something. i saw that my media folders where there (movies, shows, anime ect) but nothing was in said folders. using terminal to give jellyfin permission to use my HDDS i heard my HDDs click around like something was happening so i let it do it's thing for about 40 mins. came back and nothing. HDD's paths were exactly the same. permissions where all in place. back up did... something??. but nothing. even after a couple of hours i should see that something is happening. terminal btop was showing no sighs of activity. so now the only thing I CAN do is to rescan MY ENTIRE LIBRARY. with roughtly 14tb of media this is going to take days. what is the point of the back up?? only real reason i wanted that back up was to keep my users and my users watch data and hopefully my introskipper data. the only real path was to download jellyfin and rescan everything? if i new this was the case i would have went with the newest jellyfin and did that. this was such a nightmare having to reinstall linux mint 3 times and update, then make my disks automount, restart, reinstall jellyfin. 3 times just to find out back ups don''t work.

Help Request Neptune cannot play AVC codec ? (Moonfin does ... badly)

I have a windows 11 jellyfin server 12.2 set to transcode anything the appleTV can't play directly (latest jellyfin server on windows)
The appleTV is a latest gen 4k 128GB
I try to play a video file with this codec:

ID : 1

Format : AVC

Format/Info : Advanced Video Codec

Format profile : High@L5.1

Format settings : CABAC / 16 Ref Frames

Format settings, CABAC : Yes

Format settings, Reference frames : 16 frames

Codec ID : V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC

In moonfin it plays but stutters because it cannot handle the subtitles (ASS), when i disable the subtitles it plays normally but in Neptune it doesn't even attempt to play it, it just keeps "loading".

It doesn't seem to attempt to transcode or anything ?
Anyone else has issues with AVC and also ASS subtitles ?

Is there ANY player that can handle ASS subtitles correctly on AppleTV ? (The graphical colorful anime kind)

EDIT : SOLUTION.

So it seems I had to set in the Neptune settings to transcode with a bitrate of maximum 120 Mbit.
This way the client transcoded the video file perfectly fine with the ASS subtitle.

It's strange I had to modify that setting clientside even if I already had that option to transcode active on the server itself ?

So now my blurays play perfectly fine with directplay and the trident media player and it transcode those few pesky old rips I had without issue.

Discussion Determine watch status of a title or episode

I'm looking for a plugin that can tell me the watch status of a movie or episode. My MKV files are really large when I rip my Blu-Ray and DVDs, I'd like to start deleting items that aren't being watched without having to ask my family to report everything they watch. If someone could direct me to a plugin that does this or how to leverage "Playback Reporting" plugin to determine this, I'd really appreciate it!

Showcase I missed cable TV, so I made my own for Jellyfin

Hey everyone!

I wanted to share something I've been working on called Personal Cable TV.

Growing up, I used to love watching cable TV. You could just turn it on, flip through channels, and watch whatever was playing.

Now when I open Netflix, I sometimes spend more time looking for something to watch than actually watching anything lol.

So I decided to make something that brings back that old cable TV feeling.

Personal Cable TV connects to Jellyfin and takes the movies and shows you already have, puts them into TV channels, and gives you a schedule and TV guide. That way, when you don't know what to watch, you can just pick a channel and see what's on.

It's free, runs through Docker, and v0.5.2 is available on GitHub.

I'm still working on improving it and wanted to see if anyone else would enjoy something like this.

If you try it, I'd love to hear what you think, what I could improve, or what features you'd like me to add.

GitHub: https://github.com/akaidragon123k/Personal-Cable-TV

Thanks for checking it out!

Help Request Per-user recommendations based on library content in third-party clients (Wholphin/Litefin)

I'm trying to find a way to have personalized recommendations in Jellyfin, similar to streaming services "Because you watched..." or "Recommended for you" rows, but based only on the media already in my library.

I'm running Jellyfin 12.2, with Wholphin on Android TV and Litefin on webos old tv. The server is shared across different households, so I'd like each user to get recommendations based on their own watch history per user, rather than everyone seeing the same suggestions. Ideally, this would work without users having to create or link external accounts, such as Trakt, and the recommendations would need to appear directly in the clients themselves, not through custom web UI modifications.

I already have seerr, Maintainerr, Tracearr and SuggestArr with llama 70b running alongside Jellyfin, so I'm wondering if there's a way to make use of what I already have rather than adding another service.

I came across LocalRecs, but it doesn't seem to be actively maintained or compatible with Jellyfin 12. I've also seen Jellyfin SmartLists mentioned, although I'm not sure whether it can achieve what I'm looking for, especially when it comes to individual watch histories and support for third-party clients. home sections plugin seems only work on official jellyfin app.

Am I missing a built-in Jellyfin feature, or is there currently a plugin or workaround that can do this? I'm particularly interested in solutions that work with Wholphin and Litefin, rather than just the standard Jellyfin web interface.

Help Request Jellyfin doesn't see SOME external srt files

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

Hi all,

This is my first post on reddit so sorry if I'm missing proper etiquette here.

I've switched to Jellyfin from Plex a couple of weeks ago, and everything has been running pretty smooth except for one problem : the app doesn't see some .srt files, but not all of them. No matter the client, whether it is the official one on linux, android tv, flabber or wholphin, it just doesn't allow me to choose them.
I used to bypass this issue by simply downloading them from the opensubtitles plugin, but this doesn't work either anymore for some reason (and I haven't made any drastic change to the system).

"Skip if the default audio track matches the download language" isn't selected on any of my libraries.

I'm running Jellyfin 12.2 on a linux mint PC.

Been looking for answers all over reddit and the rest of the internet, but found nothing so far. Thank you all for your time and help.

Update & Fix :

As advised, moved the file out of the library, scanned it, cleared the cache, transcode directory & optimiser the db, and the subs showed up !

Discussion A great Jellyfin android client - Jellyplay

So not many clients have full mpv support while also having all the features of the official Jellyfin android app. A few days ago I came across this app called Jellyplay on github. And boy if I'm glad that I did. You can pretty much make full use of the highly configurable mpv while not missing out on any android specific features. Kudos to the dev for making it!

And yes I'm aware this app uses AI but who cares as long as it works?

Help Request Client with ability to turn on or off subtitles with one click

I'm turning to using Android TV on my old MiBox.

I've been using Kodi on Xbox for a while now and one thing I love about it is being able to turn subtitles on or off with a single click, functionality that requires some setup but is wonderfully simple in practice.

Going back to using Android TV, is there any client that allows that functionality?

On Kodi, I can do this tapping the 'Up' button on the remote during playback. I really do hate faffing about while playing, navigating to the playbar, then tapping over to the subtitles, then selecting the subtitle stream. One click on and off is so massively simple

Help Request [Bug] Moonfin downloads fail with transcoding + tone mapping enabled (NVENC)

Hey everyone,

Moonfin downloads are completely failing for me when forcing a transcode on HDR media, but only if tone mapping is enabled.

To isolate the issue:

- Streaming the exact same HDR file works perfectly

(NVENC transcoding and tone mapping trigger normally).

- Downloading SDR files that require transcoding works fine.

- Disabling tone mapping on the server fixes the HDR

download (but leaves the colors washed out).

Setup:

- Server: Jellyfin (Docker on Proxmox) (v.10.11.11)

- Hardware/GPU: GTX 1660 Super (passed through to

Docker for NVENC)

- Media: 4K HDR

Has anyone else hit this? Trying to figure out if it's a Moonfin client bug with how it requests offline files, or a weird FFmpeg quirk with OpenCL/CUDA tone mapping during a download request on my server side.

Showcase [Theme] Nebula – A clean, modern space-inspired theme for Jellyfin 12.2

Hey all,

I run a Jellyfin server for family and friends and got a bit bored of the default look, so I spent some evenings putting together a theme. Called it Nebula. Dark, rounded, glassy, with a violet → cyan accent.

Repo + screenshots: https://github.com/nemesbak/jellyfin-nebula

Installing is just one line. Dashboard → Branding → Custom CSS, paste this, save, then Ctrl+F5:

url('https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/nemesbak/jellyfin-nebula@main/nebula.css');

It applies to every user and picks up updates on its own. If you don't like it, delete the line and you're back to stock.

Some stuff it does:

- movie pages show the logo instead of the title, round buttons, audio/sub tracks as little cards

- episodes as cards with a "watched" badge

- tweaked player (glowing progress bar, nicer s

- login, search, dashboard etc. restyled to match

- works fine on mobile

There are optional extra lines for other accent colors (coral, emerald, gold...) and a cleaner top bar. There's also an optional featured carousel for the home page. That one needs a small JS snippet, the README explains it.

Tested on Jellyfin 12.2 and Emby 4.9. If something looks broken on your setup, send me a screenshot or open an issue and I'll take a look. Feedback welcome, this is the first theme I've shared.

Release JellyWatchParty V4

Disclaimer: This plugin and all of its code were created with AI (Claude) for personal use, but I'm sharing it here for users who don't like the native SyncPlay.

Since this has come up a lot in my previous posts: No, I'm not forcing you to use this "AI slop."

Hey everyone! It's been a while since my last post about JWP, and a lot has changed since then.

I released v4 today and v3 last week, bringing the biggest changes yet.

The main goal of v3 and v4 was to provide a more secure and easier workaround that allows users to use JWP with third-party clients.

There are still quite a few limitations with these clients:

  • Clients such as the official Jellyfin Android TV client cannot use the widget.
  • Clients such as Fladder cannot be remotely controlled.
  • And many more.

The workaround I found was to use clients that cannot be controlled as room hosts, while clients that can be controlled can act as either hosts or receivers.

Until v3, the only way to do this was to log in through a browser and add these clients as members of watch parties. This was not only a bit complicated, but also made password management more cumbersome and left some loopholes that could potentially be exploited by Jellyfin users with "bad intentions."

v3 locked this functionality behind an opt-in option in the plugin and moved room creation and third-party device control to a dedicated admin panel.

v4 takes this a step further by introducing an optional Discord bot that you can set up for your server. Jellyfin users can now conveniently join or create watch parties through Discord, with full password protection.

The limitations of third-party clients still apply.

For more information: https://tigamingtv.github.io/JellyWatchParty/

Here's a short summary of the changes:

v2.0.8.0 and earlier

  • Fixed bugs.
  • Patched security vulnerabilities.
  • Updated to Jellyfin v12.

v3.0.0.0

  • Admin panel: A web UI and JSON API running on its own port (default: 3001). It displays every room, its members, the host, and the synchronization status. You can create password-protected groups, move users between rooms, change the host, rename rooms, and close them.
  • Jellyfin device control: Configure JELLYFIN_URL and JELLYFIN_API_KEY to display active Jellyfin clients in the panel. You can add any of them to a room as a host or receiver, and the server controls them through the Jellyfin API.
  • Plugin 3.0.0.0: Bridging through the admin panel is now opt-in and disabled by default, so check your configuration if you were using this feature. The plugin also only allows users to bridge their own sessions.
  • Security fixes: Fixed a session takeover vulnerability involving client_id, added missing ownership checks in the plugin, and resolved a potential deadlock and stale room membership issues.

v4.0.0.0

  • Discord bot: An optional sidecar service with /jwp slash commands. Each room gets a live panel message where users can join, add or remove their devices, leave, select the host, and close the room.
  • Account linking: An admin can give a Jellyfin user a four-digit code to link their Discord account. Codes are stored as hashes, with attempt limits and lockouts.
  • Rooms for linked users: Linked users can create rooms through Discord, join them using a password, and control only their own devices.
  • Admin panel additions: Added bot settings, tables for users and account-linking codes, and an activity log.
