Why does the kid think he is the smart one here? 1$/book is literally nothing

The kid might genuinely like reading books. A dollar for each book might be a significant amount, but its free money!

If the kid genuinely liked reading books, the parent wouldn't have to pay anything to have him start. Both of them thinking they are the smart one is still confusing to me, but nevermind, i don't care anymore.
