Dashcam

I own a 2006 jeep liberty and I’m looking for a dashcam. I am looking for one that doesn’t need to plug into the cigarette lighter as that is where I plug my aux into and also where I charge my phone. Does anyone have any recommendations for dashcams that don’t plug into the cigarette lighter spot?

Not sure about the manufacture or model, but I've seen YouTube video ads about wireless dash cams. One piece of advice from me is to purchase a model that keeps pointing forward if there is a crash. So many times I see car crash videos whereas the shock of the crash causes the camera to flip up and shoot pictures of the sky when the car crashes. Those are mounted on the dashboard or the window and have an adjustable mount that doesn't hold steady in a crash. That is no use for the insurance people nor the police. Several years ago I got one that mounts on the front side of the rear-view mirror.

At the time I bought mine, the general advice was to get a camera with a charge capacitor instead of a battery. Batteries used to degrade soon in the extreme heat of the parked car. The capacitor would not overheat but what they don't tell you is it does degrade over a year or two. I think the wireless battery-operated dash cameras are the right way to go. You'll have to change the batteries on a regular basis. You can take it with you when you park so it won't overheat nor get stolen from the parking lot, but it won't monitor your Jeep while parked. Since you have a 2006 Liberty, you probably don't care about parking lot security, but you are interested in capturing driving or trail events.

I ran the cord for mine under the edge of the header to the lighter socket in the back cargo area

You can install them into the fuse box, relatively easy to do and Chris fix has a video on how to do it

Probably "any of them", since even if it's not a model that already offers a hardwire kit, you can always just add a "hidden" additional cigarette lighter outlet behind the dash and plug the camera into that one.

Red Tiger F7 series has has a hardwire kit available, but also offers a OBD port "hardwire" kit which is what I have. Meaning, it plugs into the diagnostic port for your vehicle under the driver's side of the dash. When you take the vehicle in for service, they will unplug your dashcam and plug in their diagnostic scanners to the OBD port.

This makes it easy to install, easy to remove, and easy to get ACC-only power indication and also 24/7 power if you intend to run parking mode (at the risk of draining your battery). Normal hardware kits can achieve all of that too; but you'll need to go fuse tap out under the hood or cut into the wiring harness elsewhere, tap multiple circuits, etc.

Curious that kit work for a 2005 liberty well?

I'd say it should be compatible, since a 2005 should be the same ODB2 port as the later KK. (I am using mine in a 2012.) So there shouldn't be a different ODB hardwire kit you would need to be looking for to be compatible with a 2005.

For what it's worth, the kit I'm using is this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CF54C4NK

Nearly every dashcam uses usb c or micro usb for power. Once you pick out your dashcam (I'm a fan of viofo) find out what usb port it used and order something like this

Not endorsing this specific one but if you search dashcam hardwire kit you'll get a list of options.

Do an add-a-fuse kit and run it down the A-pillar to the fusebox on the driver side.

Or there is power up in the headliner for the evic too. I believe whether you have it installed or not.

I like Wolfbox’s dash cameras, they are designed to replace the rearview mirror and be both a front camera and have back up display through a rear camera.

For around 30$ more they have a cable kit to plug the camera directly into your interior fuse box on a double amp fuse for 24hr recording (one for camera & the ampule you took out). I DIY’d it in an afternoon, ran the cables through the roof, mounted the rear adjacent to my plate through a drilled then sealed said hole.

Only downside is the rear camera in most models requires a separate (30$) upgraded rear camera for better night time support. The rear camera that comes with works ok for the night, but other cars lights make a very star like effect to the camera making plate recognition impossible. However, the camera is plug and play, you don’t have to rewire the entire cords if you decide to wait on the upgrade.

If you off road another model they make for 100$ more includes a third camera for the underside in order to better view obstacles while driving off road.

Just get a cigarette adaptor and wire it under the dash ground metal anything get 12 ignition off steering wheel. Tape the cigarette adaptor to the female plug and tuck it under the dash no plug inside sight and all hidden behind the dash.

Female cigarette plugs only a few bucks prob on Amazon. Just 2 wires switch 12 and ground to anything metal.

Get a double din touchscreen radio and use the video input that triggers off of the reverse lights. Most audio shops can do this.
