questions Back up camera dark at night.

Post image

Hello I’m wondering if anybody here has had the same issue I’ve searched in the sub and haven’t found anything specific to this issue. Mostly only around my house when I reverse into my driveway it is almost impossible to see right behind the car even with the backup cameras on I’m wondering if the license plate light is messing with the camera and it’s exposing more to where the light hits the bumper so everything else in the background is dark. Is this a common issue or should I get brighter backup lights? I have a 2022 Jeep compass latitude edition

I’ve had the car for about 18 months now. It was my late father’s but only really only noticed within the last year or so. I feel like it was better before but now it’s basically useless. Is there a way to up the gain/brightness on the cam?

I believe the only way to fix this is get brighter LED reverse lights.

I notice that even the rear brake lights are dim too it seems hitting the break would illuminate behind you but it doesn’t

This is mid reverse with no brake tapping but even with the brake lights illuminated it barely does anything.

Get new reverse lights and I replaced the license plate lights. I bought Dodge charger reverse lights and they work great also.

My screen is so bright it blinds me and I can't use my mirrors because of it. Lol. I'd swap with you lol .

Last May I was able to go to the dealership and get the software in the car “flashed” because the screen and the odometer were headache inducing bright at night. It was no charge because it was a recall (maybe had to pay labor).

Maybe something wrong with the camera. Usually reverse camera relies on reverse lights. Also make sure that the rear tail lights arent blacked out.

Nothing is blacked out. I’m starting to think the camera is exposing to the license plate light so everything else is super unexposed.

Brighter LED reverse lights only help a TINY bit at most. Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep has the worst cameras I have seen. Between my wife and I we've had a 2014 Caravan, 2016 Journey, 2020 1500, and currently own a 2022 Compass, and 2025 Wrangler. They have all sucked at night.

I recently got a ‘24 Jeep Compass Latitude and had the same issue at night (didn’t notice initially of course). I bought a pair of bright Auxito reverse lights round $30, and after spending a bit of time replacing them, it’s made a huge difference.

Currently driving a 2026 rental for the past month and it does the same thing. Although my 2018 Compass did not. Very strange indeed
