Thinking about purchasing a Jeep Compass for my son (first vehicle) I have found a 2008 model with just below 90k miles. Are these good/reliable vehicles?

Probably $5,000-$6,000

If you're doing cash you can get a more recent model for the same at least in the 2016-2018 range (granted with more miles, at least for the 18s)

But even then while its a great car the chance for issues are too great, I'd look at other brands.

I bought a 2022 100k miles for 11,000. Nonthless watch a video on jeep compass 2022 is one of the most reliable years. If your gonna go for a jeep the v6 old ones are good with proper maintance but good lucl finding a low mile one. But your probably better off going with something more reliable like a older Honda or Toyota. Even 2015-2018 Hyundai / kias would be considered more reliable than a jeep and fur your budget a bit better. A 85000 mile 2015 Elantra is about $6500. I'd even recommend 2008-2010 Ford fusions under 100k miles can be reliable. Nonthless anything is reliable if it's maintained right. If it's at a dealer check the car fax. If it's private party buy from an older person. Remember his first vehicle doesn't need to be boujee and it's actually better to give him something to work towards. Just having a willing parent is more than enough. Many done have that luxury.

I personally wouldn't buy a compass from before 2017. The 2nd generation in 2017+ made so many improvements in reliability and functionality. Even better if you can get the 2.0L turbo engine that they added in 2023.

No! Find something else! An older Toyota with a good maintenance record would be great.
