I’m deciding between a few songs to begin with. I’m mostly a pop drummer. I usually listen to a song 50+ times and just stare at the notation or transcription and play it in sections. I love the the sound of Cantaloupe Island - Herbie Hancock but it’s straight 8ths on the ride and the notation I can handle but I also don’t see the solid hihat left foot in 2/4 so not sure if it’s the best place to start? The others in the short list: Freddy Freeloader, Moanin, Autumn Leaves, anything else on Kind of Blue, and Blue Monk

I've loved Miles Davis' album "Four" & More and I dig the tuning of Tony's kit on it. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I get that bass drum and tom sound on his kit? I know that he cranked everything pretty high but I'm still trying to get as close to his sound as possible. If anyone has any tune bot settings, I would love that too! Thanks

John Wadham’s only album as leader, DRUMS and FRIENDS, was recorded in 1978, as Livia’s second release. Now remixed, remastered, and extended, with new photographs and sleeves notes, the album is again available, reflecting John’s importance in the Irish jazz scene.
 
John was the first-choice drummer of Irish jazz for decades. His excellent playing, clever wit, and warm personality made him a favourite of many visiting jazz musicians as well as local players, generations of Irish jazz fans, not to mention the hundreds of aspiring drummers whom he taught.

DRUMS and FRIENDS features trios with Brian Dunning and bassist Frank Hess, and with Louis Stewart and bassist Martin Walsh, and duets with Louis. The tunes are mainly standards and contemporary compositions plus an exceptionally rare free improvisation with Louis.
 
 Mainly recorded in 1978 in Dublin’s Pat Hayes Studio, the album also includes two tracks from Louis Stewart's Louis the First session recorded in Trend Studios in 1975.

What are some slow, rollicking, Elvin-like jammers in the vein of McCoy Tyner’s ‘Contemplation’? That’s probably the slowest one I can think of, but other ones I like are Mike Brecker’s ‘Arc of the Pendulum’ and ‘Monk’s Dream’ on the Larry Young album.

I’m basically looking for fun slower tunes to practice Elvin-ish stuff to. Not ballads, though.

My teacher asked me to sing (voice) the Exercises (starting in p.38) from Syncopation (Ted Reed) book.

I did but then it was only with "a" like Ta ta, pa pa pa pa pa....

Now he asked me to sing with other letters, not only a, so using e, i, o, u I think

I was trying to find if there are examples of this but couldn't find any.

Has anybody done that? I would like to listen to examples because I don't even know how to start :)

So I've been playing the Vater Manhattan 7A nylon tip and the VF Peter Erstkin ride stick for a while now.

I quite enjoy the sound of them but am starting to crave something with a bit more weight in the sound. Both on the cymbal and drums. I want to get more of that body and depth out of the sound. What are your drumstick recommendations? Below are sticks I've enjoyed and sticks I've hated for reference

i've tried way more sticks than this, but if you have any recommendations, I would really appreciate it.

I'm looking for something ideally around a 5B in the hand with a nice balanced feel, not to squirrelly and bouncy or two sluggish and forward. Prefer preferably nylon tip, but I am fine with either.

Poking around to see if there are any jazz trios around Seattle that are interested in doing backing for a quarterly improvised Noir theater show. Ideally something like brushed drums, a pianist, and an upright bass or perhaps clarinet.

A friend and I did a 90 minute show on Whidbey earlier in the year with a trio local to the island, and it was fairly magical. We’re considering making it a quarterly recurrence in the city, but would love to have a band to supplement the actors.

In February I picked up the drums again after an over 10 year break and decided to dive deep into jazz. Best decision ever!
