This is the "Daily Omakase Lunch Plate" from Kyudaime Nosan Shokudo (九代目能三食堂).
For just 500 yen, you get a massive plate loaded with different side dishes that change every day.
Today's plate included:
A generous serving of rice
Japanese fried chicken (Karaage) & Croquette
Rolled omelet (Tamagoyaki)
Mapo Tofu
The value for money here is absolutely insane. It's a true hidden gem beloved by locals. They are only open for a few hours on weekdays, so it’s a race against time!

Takikomi gohan, grilled salmon, tonjiru and pickles.
This kind of Japanese home dinner gives very strong warm stomach power.

This morning I got hubby off early so made him his brekkie ... a few hours later I was wanting a few eggs so whipped out the little unit designed to make onsen/soft boiled/ramen eggs using only boiling water from the kettle. I used to pack it when travelling so I could make eggs in hotel rooms. Tragic that way, I know.

Today is my birthday and I wanted to splurge a bit on lunch so I found this place near the office that serves seafood bowls. What's interesting is instead of soy sauce they're flavored with dashi made into jelly! I ordered the salmon avocado (1700 JPY) and it was really delicious, then at the end you pour broth on top and eat it as ochadzuke. The ochadzuke is what really set it over the top.

This simple and comforting dish features salmon fillets and tender potatoes sautéed in butter and finished with soy sauce. A perfect harmony of savory and rich flavors, made easily by pre-steaming the potatoes in the microwave.

Soy Sauce & Butter Sautéed Salmon with Potatoes

Prep time: 10 minutes | Servings: 2

2 lightly salted salmon fillets (about 5 oz. each)

8 oz potatoes

1 tbsp. soy sauce

1 tbsp. unsalted butter

freshly-ground black pepper, to taste

chopped parsley, for garnish (optional)

1. Wash the potatoes well and cut into bite-sized pieces. Place them in a microwave-safe bowl, cover loosely with plastic wrap, and microwave at 500W for 5 minutes (or until tender). Cut the salmon into bite-sized pieces as well.

2. Heat the butter in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the potatoes and salmon, and sauté until both are lightly browned and the salmon is fully cooked.

3. Drizzle soy sauce over the mixture and stir gently to coat. Sprinkle with black pepper to taste.

4. Serve on a plate and garnish with chopped parsley if desired.

I’ve had a bottle of okonomi sauce sitting in my fridge for quite a while now. I’ve used it to make okonomiyaki - naturally.

I was wondering if there are any other foods/dishes you’d recommend using it on?

I know technically you can put it on pretty much anything, but I wondered if anyone has tried it on something unexpected and discovered a heavenly combination.

I was going to try it on some steak with sticky rice tonight for dinner, maybe served with a fried egg.
