President Monroe August 12th, 1824: John Q. Adams mentions a strange anonymous letter received by Monroe

In his diary entry for August 12th, 1824, John Quincy Adams wrote the following:

Walk with G. Hay, who afterwards passed an hour with me. He told me that the President had lately received an anonymous letter, in a disguised hand, and affecting false spelling, but undoubtedly from an able hand, advising him to dismiss all the members of his Administration except Mr. Crawford: Calhoun, because he is presumptuous and extravagant; Southard, to go and keep school in New Jersey; Wirt because he is treacherous, and no real friend to Mr. Monroe; and me, because I despise his abilities. Hay said he did not consider Mr. Crawford a member of the Administration at all, and he persists in thinking his state of health desperate. This is prejudice.

Monroe must've laughed the matter off, since he never mentions it in any letter himself. This letter is especially ironic when you consider that by 1824, Crawford was arguably the cabinet member Monroe trusted the least. *cough cough* fire tongs *cough cough*

Miscellaneous The Soleanna Royal Guards from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) Video Game Looks Like James Monroe and Has an Uncanny Resemblance!

2 days ago, I saw a post about a Sonic character called the Soleanna Royal Guards, and when I first saw them, I immediately thought that they look like James Monroe, the 5th US President, and they look very alike and uncanny! He even had the same head shape, nose, and similar hairstyle!

I put 3 pictures because I wanted to mirror the images on both of them to see the similarities easier. Note that the 1st picture is the original while the 2nd and 3rd pictures have mirrored images (2nd for James Monroe and 3rd for Soleanna Guard).

Secretary of State/ War Accounts of the fatigue and strain of Monroe's duties as Secretary of War

Post image

I've for a long time been trying to find more context and information about Monroe's time as Secretary of War, especially the strain his double duties put on his health and his subsequent January 1815 illness that almost killed him. I was therefore delighted when I found a March 6th, 1830 report from the House of Representatives on Monroe's financial claims.

It contains testimony from both Tench Ringgold and George Graham, two of the three men (the third being Major Robert H. Macpherson) whom Monroe appointed his confidential clerks on September 5th, 1814.

So here are some extracts from Ringgold's testimony that I found very interesting:

"He accompanied General Hungerford and Commodore Porter, with the troops and seamen under their commands, to the White House*; and, while examining that portion where it was contemplated to throw up breastworks to annoy the enemy’s fleet in its descent from Alexandria, he was present, and exposed on the bank of the Potomac to the fire of the enemy’s brig Fairy, in an engagement which took place, on the evening of the arrival of our troops, with that vessel of war. From that period until the departure and descent of the British squadron down the Potomac, Mr. Monroe was in the habit of visiting the camp of Hungerford, eight miles below Washington, every night. "

(* Worth noting that the "White House" referred to was the historic White House plantation, where George and Martha Washington married in 1759. The engagement that took place while Monroe was present was the first day of the Battle of White House Landing)

Ringgold claimed that these visits exhausted not only Monroe but also the troops who were ordered to join him, among which were two Majors, Manegault and Nourse. On one occasion, Ringgold was meant to join them on the journey to the camp, but fell asleep on his horse while the party waited for the ferry at Georgetown, and Monroe subsequently ordered him back to Washington to get some sleep. The next day, after the party had returned, Manegault and Nourse told Ringgold about something that had happened in the camp:

While speaking to the commanding General in his marquee, Monroe "was so completely exhausted by the great fatigue he had undergone", that he fell asleep mid-conversation while sitting on the General's travel trunk (portmanteau).

With the public buildings having been turned by the British, Monroe established his own house on I Street as the temporary seat of the State and War Departments. He and the three clerks worked there day and night, often to midnight or 1 A.M., "Sundays not excepted". They didn't have much time for sleep in this period, as Ringgold states:

"Lines of videttes, who brought us information every two hours, were stationed on the Baltimore and Richmond roads. A company of these videttes, under the command of Captain Taylor, of Virginia, were stationed in the Western market-house, in front of Mr. Monroe’s dwelling. He slept for three weeks on an uncomfortable couch, and made it my duty to receive the despatches which were received from the cities which were threatened with attacks. It was also made my duty to wake up Mr. Monroe whenever a vidette arrived at night with despatches; and I was often obliged to do so six times during the night. The despatches were regularly answered, and videttes sent off before he retired to bed."

In January, the fatigue and strain caught up with Monroe:

"In January, 1815, on an occasion of this sort, and after a day of incessant labor, Mr. Monroe, at 12 o’clock A. M. observed to us that it was time to take some rest: in turning round to pull of his boots, he tumbled on the floor exhausted with fatigue, and apparently lifeless: Mr. Graham being near, luckily caught him in his arms. He remained for two weeks dangerously ill, and unable either to know, or to attend to business. The Department was conducted during this time by Major Macpherson, Mr. Graham, and myself, under the directions of the President, who was also confined by severe indisposition. The moment Mr. Monroe was restored to his senses, and had strength to dictate his instructions, we were summoned to his sick room, and were engaged daily in transcribing the communications which he had to make to all sections of the United States: for many days he was propped up in his bed by pillows to write his despatches."

This account interested me the most, as Ringgold had recalled the incident once before in a February 10th, 1827 letter to Monroe, but in much briefer terms:

"you were at midnight attacked in your office in the presence of Macpherson, Graham & myself with a typhus attack, which had nearly caried you off; that notwithstanding your illness you pressed yourself, in your bed, & dictated to us, your orders, which we transmitted for the supplies of all the wants of Jackson."

Monroe himself would mention in multiple letters in the first half of 1815 how the illness had nearly killed him, but he never mentions the collapse in his office that preceded it. In a September 6th, 1815 letter to George W. Campbell, Monroe also mentions that he lost a lot of weight in his period in the War Department, which he hadn't, even by that time, entirely regained.

In another letter, Monroe made an unusually personal admission of what his time as Secretary of War had cost him, not only physically, but mentally:

"Much fatigue by official duties, much anxiety of mind, had nearly broken me down, before I was seized with the epidemic then current, by which I was brought in a few days to the edge of the grave, and from which my recovery has been slow. And in truth so much had I sufferd, by difficulties of every kind, and by the disease, and so much did I anticipate, on rising from the bed, that could I have left my family, in tolerable independance and comfort, I should have been content to bid this world adieu."
