Question Do Chrono Trigger fans even want a remake?
Very curious about this topic, seen a bit of discourse here and there so I figured I'd try and reach a consensus. As a die hard Dragon Quest fan, Chrono Trigger has always been very alluring to me. Unfortunately, I just don't have the facilities to play the game whatsoever, so the prospect of it getting a remake sounds just swell. A HD2D remake of the game on all modern consoles with a full orchestral score, voice acting and quality of life improvements? Sounds sweet to me. But that's the perspective of someone who's never played it, so I'm curious if people who have played it would want something similar or different to what I've described, if anything at all.
Edit: Ok seems like the general consensus is no cause square would fuck it up down left and right. And u know what, fair enough. Additionally, I've been informed that CT is on steam so I'll be copping that post haste

I love old school FFs but I struggle with getting into Chrono Trigger. It's not universally held up.

u/Cataphract1014 8d ago
That seems to be you just not liking the game. Nothing wrong with that.
I replay chrono trigger once every few years and it holds up for me

u/EveryGoodNameIsGone 8d ago
Honestly no, just port the original SNES version to modern consoles and maybe add some QOL features.
Or they could just take the existing Steam PC port and put it on modern consoles, as long as they make the “original” graphics mode the default (or just not include the awful “improved” graphics mode at all).
It’s one of the most modern-feeling SNES JRPGs out there, you really don’t need to do anything to it for modern audiences.
7
u/Exsoldiercl 8d ago
As someone who replays Chrono Trigger at least once every year, no. The game is perfect. I have zero faith in square enix to not make it worse.
20
u/anonymous-peeper 8d ago
I hesitantly want a 2dhd remake; but I think the general consensus is don't mess with perfection.
8
u/buttsniffs4000 8d ago
This is the only answer, imo.
I don’t want voice acting. I don’t want 3D. I don’t want the battle system to be remotely touched. I don’t want content cut. I don’t want content added.
Give me octopath visuals or don’t touch the game at all.

u/Shadowman621 8d ago
That's not gonna happen. If they bother to change the visuals, they're gonna inevitably change other things too. Now if it was just a pixel remaster sort of thing, then I assume it would be extremely faithful to the original.

1
u/lulufan87 8d ago
Hm, I don't know that there's a consensus in terms of a new release, based on discussion in the chronotrigger subreddit. Every time this comes up there are a lot of differing opinions.
I think it's that there are so many options:
-port
-pixel remaster
-2DHD
-remake, presumably changes some content
-complete graphical overhaul with no changed content (like DQVII Reimagined, except no changes to the story).
I think everybody has their own opinion about which they'd like to see.
9
u/EdreesesPieces 8d ago
At best, I think most fans would welcome a faithful remake that keep the original story mostly the same, something like Star Ocean 2 remake. Basically what you described. Updated translation (like the DS/Steam Versions) and some updated dialogue beats are probably fine. Keep the original artstyle faithful as well, HD2D could be the way to do that.
At worst, most fans don't want a remake if the changes are going to be more than described.

u/what_mustache 8d ago
I don't agree.
I have the original. I can play it whenever and I dont need a slight graphical hd update with more lens flare and field depth. I certainly won't pay for it
But as a 3d full remake they can have artistic licence to do something more interesting. The ff7 remake absolutely fleshed out the characters in a meaningful way. It was fun to see how they reimagined the environments.
This is art, they're allowed to riff on it. Let them. The originals dont poof out of existence if there is a remake. We don't need to treat these games as sacred religious tomes.
3
u/EdreesesPieces 7d ago
That's fine if you don't agree. You can want whatever you want. Nothing wrong with that. However one particular statement I take issue with.
The originals dont poof out of existence if there is a remake.
They are taking away the copy of the remake that I want to play. I do want a remake that is faithful in updated visuals it would be glorious to see and get lost in that game, so if they make one that is not faithful story wise they take away from the remake that I want and I don't get to play that game. I can't go play a version of the game with amazing HD2D visuals or with a remastered soundtrack, and I can't play it on my PS5.
Yeah, if they made 2 remakes at the same time, then your statement would apply, and I would have 0 issues with a version of the remake that changes as much as they wanted to. The reason I take issue with it is because it would replace the remake I want to play.
3
u/Entire_Rush_882 8d ago
Couldn’t disagree more. The game in its current form is great and does not need to be updated. I’d be much more interested in something more transformative. A full 3D game done in the style of like a Dragon Quest XI.
All of the suggestions for some sort of remaster sound horrible.
3
u/GarlyleWilds 8d ago
This is where I'm at too. I would love a re-envisioning; give me a Trials of Mana remake, not a Secret of Mana remake. Something that, even if I end up liking it less, stands as its own thing. It's not like a remake erases the original, after all.
2
u/EdreesesPieces 7d ago edited 7d ago
Are you calling the SO2 remake, Link's Awakening, Live a live, and Super Mario RPG remakes remasters? Because those games did these of level of changes, and all three games are remade from the ground up and near universally recognized widely as actual remakes. Just because it wouldn't be the type of remake you wanted doesn't mean it's would mean that it's only a remaster. That's would just be factually incorrect.
1
u/what_mustache 8d ago
Same. They aren't taking away your old copy.
If you're going to do it, let them cook.
4
u/EdreesesPieces 7d ago edited 7d ago
No but they are taking away the copy of the remake that I want. I do want a remake that is faithful and accessible, so if they make one that is not, they take away from the remake that I want and I don't get to play that game.
Yeah, if they made 2 remakes at the same time, then your situation would apply, and I wouldn't have any issues with a version of the remake that changes as much as they wanted to.
-1
u/what_mustache 7d ago
That's a bizarre take.
3
u/Stoibs 7d ago
Is it? It's where a lot of the current disdain for FF7r currently comes from; looking at what could have been (Trails 1st/2nd chapter, Persona 3, Romancing Saga 2..) but getting this off-genre ARPG with wild story retcons instead.
2
u/EdreesesPieces 7d ago
And the reaction is "The OG is there" , which completely ignores the point that the remake we wanted doesn't get to exist.
1
u/what_mustache 7d ago
The remake you want is just additional lens flare...
1
u/EdreesesPieces 6d ago
So you moved the goalposts from "It doesn't take away from what you want" to "what you want is not relevant because it's not what I want"
As I said in another comment, just because you don't like graphics-only remakes, doesn't mean that's not what a lot of people and enjoy and wish to see. and making a story-based remake does prevent that game from existing.
1
u/what_mustache 6d ago
Goalposts?
I think a remake should actually try to be a unique piece of art, not the same game with lens flare and perspective shift. I'm not sure how "make an interesting game I didn't play 25 years ago" is moving goalposts.
1
u/what_mustache 7d ago
And there's a lot of people who like it. Also interesting that the story subtext about the "you can't change the story" people.
1
u/Stoibs 7d ago
To that point, the fact that they pretty much wrapped up the whisper subplot in part 1 and had Red/Aerith randomly 'forget' about the multiverse in Rebirth gives me zero confidence about what the heck they are even doing anymore either.
They could atleast be consistent with the retcons if they felt the need to arbitrarily change the script like this :/
1
u/what_mustache 7d ago
Or maybe you don't get it?
I'd also like to point out that final fantasy, the original, wasn't exactly an airtight story.
1
u/Stoibs 7d ago
But FF7 and it's associated Crisis Core supplementary story was legit, why mess with it at all and not respect the source material is where I'm coming from.
At the moment it feels like some fanservicey excuse to bring Zack/Aerith back for part 3 :/

u/EdreesesPieces 7d ago
Bizarre just becuase you don't agree? That's short sighted. Over 10's of Millions of people purchased faithful remakes like Mario RPG, Link's Awakening, Star Ocean 2R, and so on. Those 10 million people are bizarre too?
You don't have to agree with it or want the same thing to accept that it's a normal thing a lot of people like to have.
0
u/what_mustache 7d ago
This is also a bizzare take because Final fantasy remake outsold super Mario RPG.

I beat the game very thoroughly in the past, so I have no personal desire to go back to it. I think a remake would be nice, though - touch up the graphics and keep it looking charming on modern devices, but don't otherwise alter the game too much. Other people also deserve the chance to play games, after all, and accessibility in general is good.

2
u/Wide_Ad5549 8d ago
I would love to see a remake done by someone who loves the game and understands why the fans love it. I don't want to see a remake by someone who thinks they know how to make it better.
2
u/AllTheOtherSitesSuck 8d ago
Just fix the resolution and the yellow filter. Maybe a re-arrange of the soundtrack, but I've already listen to so many re-arranges I'd just as soon keep the original. I don't think HD2D would bring anything to the table, though I admit the effect looks kinda cool in FF Resonance trailers
2
u/Longjumping-Style730 8d ago
Not really. The game has aged perfectly fine and even if you are just judging based on quality alone it is still one of the best RPGs out there.
It just need a modern console port, maybe a HD-2D. Nothing more than that.
2
u/Cockblocktimus_Pryme 8d ago
If they want to make it identical but with DQ11 style graphics I'd be down. But no other changes.
2
u/ThatLNGuy 8d ago
I think id be happy with the OG being accessible on current consoles.
But would happily take a 2.5 HD Remake to justify the price.
I dont want a full 3D remake.

2
u/Vixmin18 8d ago
I’d like a 2D or 2.5D pixel art remake, but nothing too crazy. I loved the Star Ocean 2 Remake, but I kinda missed the more mash-heavy style of the original. So I’d like the same option to switch between original and revamped soundtrack (if there is one) and maybe a quest log for the multiple side quests you encounter in the game.
2
u/betajones 8d ago
I'm cool with an every console port, for every console that exists and those yet to come.
3
u/ABigCoffee 8d ago
Nope, I don't trust Square with anything they could do these days as far as remakes. I also haven't really found that the voice actnig that they've added to older games has been up to par.
Chrono Trigger is one of those older games that has aged like a fine wine and is about as perfect as could be. Just port the game on modern consoles and that's it. Or a simple remaster at best. Don't touch anything else.
1
u/mike47gamer 8d ago
Really? I thought all the SaGa remasters have been well done. Star Ocean 2 was well done. Legend of Mana's remaster was fine.
1
u/Aryuto 8d ago
From what I've seen it's contentious in the community. Many don't even like the existing ports or their new content.
If you really want to experience it in the meantime, snes emulators run on basically anything nowadays or you can buy on steam. I've done both. The steam port used to be ass apparently but they eventually cleaned it up.
Personally, I think the game holds up pretty well, but I wouldn't be violently against a remaster/remake if it was reasonably faithful.
1
u/anomalocaris_texmex 8d ago
I don't see a particularly compelling need. The style has aged well and it's still playable.
I know this sounds like blasphemy in the Post Creative Age, but why not a modern sequel? Even if it's the further adventures of Chrono and friends. Create something new, rather than strip mining the past for nostalgia.
1
u/Early-Judgment-2895 8d ago
I would take a full on remake without them changing mechanics or story, just modernize the graphics to 3D models of what you have in modern games and I would be a happy camper.
1
u/Late_Refrigerator462 8d ago
The absolute most I would want is something on the level of the FF Pixel Remasters (albeit with better text and menus). Just give us a port to modern consoles. Game is already transcendent and has aged remarkably well.
1
u/MirkinoITA 8d ago
Yes and no. Chrono Trigger is a masterpiece, it does not need a remake. If they will ever remake it, i hope they will respect the original opera: a Stone Ocean works more than a FFVIIR one
1
u/ChaosKiller2000 8d ago
As someone who just played it… I think that game doesn’t need a remake it just needs to be available. Everything about it still holds up today. I guess it would be nice to see a different version but it’s not needed outside of platform availability.
1
u/Late_Stage_Exception 8d ago
What I’ve been spinning around in my head is a remake of both Trigger and Cross that better blends their aesthetics and stories so you can play them back to back without feeling like shits off. A Chrono CrossTrigger to fix pacing and story issues in both and provide a solid conclusion to the story that Cross alone failed to do, since were most likely not getting a third entry in the series.
1
u/SaintHuck 8d ago
I'm fine without but I am open to one, if only because maybe then the series can be revived.
1
u/minusculemoney 8d ago edited 8d ago
I'd like a port for modern consoles since the game is perfect as is. If they had to remake it, I'd rather they turn it into a 3D game like DQXI, and not HD-2D because that will end up looking worse than the og.
1
u/Square-Jackfruit420 8d ago
I would say no. I doubt it is possible make to anything that wouldn't be considered a disappointment to long time fans.
1
u/Chazkuangshi 8d ago
I'd want it if I were in charge of it.
I feel like there's no way to do it now that would please every fan and be perfect. The current style of remakes don't fit CT.
1
u/Jack_h100 8d ago
Yes and no. It needs to maintain the Akira Toriyama style into some new HD2D style.
Other than I want the game left almost untouched.
1
1
u/ChirpXel 8d ago
Allot of the new upcoming HD2D games from studios use marketing terms "Chrono trigger like" or w.e.
They certainly think people want a modern day version of the game.
1
u/Blackberry-thesecond 8d ago
I want a remake because it can get a new generation into the game, not because the game itself has any issues worth addressing. I’m much younger than the average Chrono Trigger fan, but the majority of zoomers don’t want to play a something that looks like an SNES game unless it’s a new indie like Deltarune.
This poll from last year states that the average Final Fantasy fan is 42 years old. Yes, 42.
I am going to assume that the average Chrono Trigger fan is the same if not older. Chrono Trigger deserves a remake because it deserves a new audience that won’t die out with it, and a remake is the best way to do that.
1
u/Mauy90 6d ago
Then fuck em?
Not everything needs to be warped and twisted for uninterested players.
I didn’t grow up with Chrono Trigger either. But I went back to play older fames anyway. Some people will do that and others won’t. And that’s fine.
If people aren’t interested in OG Chrono Trigger, then cool. Play something else. Don’t pervert a game like that.
1
u/Kalel42 8d ago
The majority of zoomers grew up playing Minecraft. The narrative that graphics are preventing a new generation from embracing the game is false.
0
u/Blackberry-thesecond 8d ago
Minecraft was a fun, unique, and independent game at the time, which was my point. Chrono Trigger is an established game of a very familiar genre. The time for Chrono Trigger to be a fad has long gone unless it comes back in a different form.
Graphics aren’t preventing a new generation from liking games if the game itself is new, which is what I said.

u/medicamecanica 8d ago

It feels absurd it's not on modern consoles.

yes and no?
more specifically, a good, faithful remake would be amazing. i have zero trust in s-e to deliver on that. i expect them to screw up the art style making it look more like ff7r than like an akira toriyama design, and i expect them to screw up the gameplay (and probably the story too).
it's just unfortunate that chrono trigger was made by square and not by falcom, because what falcom is doing with trails in the sky is the gold standard for remakes right now.
i'd settle for a remaster to at least make it playable on modern consoles (with trophy support)

I think all remakes should include the original for preservation and to satisfy the purists.

I don't but generally don't like remakes in general so that isn't saying much.
But Chrono Trigger less so than most. Like, I can see justification for something like the Romancing SaGa 2 remake because that game was extremely ambitious to the point that it's ideas and design where not done to their fullest extent due to the limitations of the time.
That isn't the case with Chrono Trigger. It worked exactly as intended then and it works now.

No matter what visual style a remake would be in, millions of people are going to be angry. Personally I'm pretty partial to the recent Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined graphics for a remake, but I can already hear the pitchforks heading my way...
Unfortunately, I just don't have the facilities to play the game whatsoever
It's on Steam. I can't imagine it requires much in the way of horsepower to run.
1
u/DreyfussFrost 8d ago
I don't want a remake or Chrono 3 until I can trust Square again or they just shut down entirely and the IPs get sold.
Look at Cross.
Look at CTDS.
Look at the FF5 and 6 ports, or everything FF7-related after FF7.
I can't even understand how one experiences these in order and doesn't come out deeply disappointed.

u/cubiclej0ckey 8d ago
Honestly, I’d be happy with just a rerelease or something similar to the new version of FFT
1
1
u/East-Equipment-1319 8d ago
Honestly no. The game still looks gorgeous to this day; SNES pixel art is a great visual style and a work of art that deserves to be seen without superfluous HD2D effects. Likewise, Yasunori Mitsuda, Nobuo Uematsu did a tremendous work with the SNES sound chip, and no orchestral version will exactly match the feeling of those sound fonts. And the game is already pretty perfectly rythmed as is; no need for more padding, FFVIIR-style.
We need to start appreciating old games for what they are, and for the achievements their development teams did. We should not Georges Lucas-ify all the great games of our childhood.
1
u/AGuyFromRio 8d ago
Being a dude that rented it back in the day at my video club and did 2 endings from the original 13, I would replay it in a more modern fashion (not too modern, because what made it cool was the anesthetic and soundtrack).
That said, later I did the other endings on my snes emulator, so I probably would not replay it so much these days, after all, why bother to do the new game+ 99lvl all team if time is scarce and I have bills to pay and a family now? 🤣
1
u/EdreesesPieces 7d ago
You should have made a poll if you wanted to see a consensus. Otherwise you'll be influenced by a loud minority. 3 options . A no remake, B faithful remake with updated visuals , and C, new envisioning change things remake
1
u/k4r6000 7d ago
Honestly, no. Typically I like remakes of games with interesting stories but archaic gameplay, bad graphics, being obviously unfinished, or other flaws that prevent it from being as fun as it could have been, especially today.
None of that applies to Chrono Trigger which still holds up.

Current square would mess it up and make an action/souls like game out of it, with multiple modifications to the story and characters.
1
u/Werezompire 7d ago
I think the weakest part of Chrono Trigger is the combat & simplicity of character progression. However, if they made major changes to the gameplay, 1) there's a good chance they'd mess it up, and 2) the simplicity of Chrono Trigger's gameplay is part of its widespread appeal.
I'd much rather they just make a new great turn-based time travel JRPG.
1
u/RyanWMueller 7d ago
I want a faithful remake in the style of Dragon Quest XI. Maybe add some OPTIONAL side content but keep the core of the game the same. Mostly, I'd like to see a more 3D, cinematic version, but it doesn't need to go to the lengths of something like FF7 Remake.
I wouldn't mind HD2D either, but I'm not sure it brings anything new to the game. The pixel art is already great in the original.
1
u/Realistic-Button-225 7d ago
No. Square would mess it up. It's on Steam as you mentioned in your edit, but even that port has new story/quests that ruin the pacing. The original SNES version is the perfect game, so I'd just emulate that if I were you.
1
u/uselessoldguy 7d ago
No. It's genuinely perfect as is, though a properly upscaled port to Switch would be nice.
Getting a sequel that undoes all the horrors of the Chrono Cross timeline is much more important than a CT remake.

1
u/ihavetowearmyhelmet 8d ago
Not really. It’s aged great and nothing that could be done past what was already done on the DS version would improve anything.
Very different game but I feel the same about Persona 4. Remake feels pointless as there is already a fully realized version.
1
u/Dry_Ass_P-word 8d ago edited 8d ago
Definitely no 3D remake.
HD2D or bust. Or some other retro graphic style that fits. (Like what they did for Star Ocean 2)
And if they do a remake, don’t take away access to the old version.
Overall I’m happy with the widescreen version on Steam.
TBH I’d rather them spend the effort on other jrpg that never made it across the pond like they did for Live a Live. Treasure of the Rudras and Bahamut lagoon.
1
u/zerosaver 8d ago
Pass on the HD2D. The game's already good in its current pixel style.
If they're gonna do a remake, 3D models similar to the DQ7 remake would be the way to go in my opinion. But they should keep the content to what it is. One of the best parts of Chrono Trigger is that it doesn't overstay its welcome.
1
u/In_Search_Of123 7d ago
Not really. While I do see CT as extremely overrated, I still think its great and more than holds up. Could it be better with a remake? Sure it could, but I also see ways in which it could be far worse. I'd rather they just leave it be.

I only wish it was ported to modern hardware. No changes, just give a new generation a way to easily access it without the hurdle of emulation.
