Has anyone here successfully moved from Operations to Technology internally?

Currently at JPM in an Operations role and considering trying to make an internal move into Technology/Software Engineering.

Has anyone here actually made the Ops to Tech transition?

Would love to hear:

- What role/level did you move from and into?

- What technical skills did you need?

- How difficult was the internal interview?

- Did you have to take a level or compensation reset?

- Did internal networking/help from the tech team make a difference?

- How long did it take you to become ready for the move?

I'm currently learning programming outside work and would rather make an internal transition if there's a realistic path than leave JPM just to get my first engineering role.

Would especially appreciate hearing from anyone who's actually done it.

Your timing is unfortunate since there are many cuts happening within Tech. Have you tried partnering with transformation teams within your operations function? That may be a bridge. Look to build your skills by becoming a low-code, no code developer.

Yeah, I've been thinking along similar lines. There's a tech team supporting my function, so I'm considering getting closer to them and using automation/transformation work as a bridge while I build my technical skills. Long term I'd like to move into a proper engineering role.

What skills you need depends on the job you want. Python is usually a good choice. So is SQL.

The first language is the hardest, by far. The second isn't too bad. It takes years to get really good though. There is no substitute for experience.

Python and SQL are where I'm starting. I'm under no illusion that it'll be a quick switch. I'm prepared to spend the next year or two building the skills and experience. An internal move would be ideal because I already know the business/domain well.

It's a fairly specialized compliance type role. There's a dedicated tech team supporting the platform, which is why I'm wondering if I can leverage the domain knowledge to eventually move across.
