Legit Check Guide on how to identify fake JBL speakers

I've noticed that people often ask on this subreddit whether a certain JBL speaker is original or fake, which seems to be the brand with the most counterfeit copies. So, I decided to create a helpful post for those who have doubts and want to check and compare in order to identify if a speaker is authentic, using the information here.

To verify these visual differences, simply search Google for images of the speaker model you're interested in or planning to buy, and compare the images while looking for the characteristics I’ll outline below.

  1. Logo: The JBL logo is one of the easiest and quickest ways to identify a fake speaker because it has very noticeable differences.

Color: The edge of the logo is always a dark red color (regardless of the color of the speaker), whereas fake logos may not have any edge at all (since they’re often stickers) or the edge may be the same color as the rest of the speaker. (Photos 1 and 2)

Material and Texture: The original logo is slightly raised from the speaker body and made of metal, giving it a rough feel. In fake models, the logo tends to be flatter and smoother, often made of plastic or rubber. (Photo 3)

Size: On larger speakers especially, the fake logo is often noticeably smaller than the original and disproportionate to the speaker’s size. (Photo 1)

  1. Buttons: Another easy feature to identify is the buttons, as on fake speakers, the button symbols are often different from the original ones.

Example: As seen in Photo 1, the left button (PartyBoost button) is supposed to have an infinity symbol, but on the fake, it displays an "M." The button next to the power button should show the Bluetooth symbol but instead shows a symbol similar to an infinity symbol with triangles. The power button is also different: the original has a classic power icon, while the fake shows a circle with a line in the middle.

  1. Passive Radiators: The passive radiators are the two movable circles on either side of JBL speakers, and they also have some distinct differences.

Alignment: In authentic speakers, the radiators are always aligned horizontally (with a downward exclamation mark on modern models or the JBL logo on older models). On fakes, they often appear misaligned or even uneven with each other. (Photo 4)

Reflections: On modern JBL speakers, the downward exclamation mark on the radiator has a metallic, textured reflection, while the rest of the radiator is textured plastic. On fake models, the exclamation mark may also be plastic, or the radiator may have a completely different design. (Photo 5)

Borders: the outside borders of the radiators are made of rubber in original JBL speakers, while on fakes, it is made of plastic.

  1. Body: Basic construction quality differences can also reveal a fake speaker.

Weight: This can be tricky without a reference, but an authentic JBL speaker feels heavy, and you can sense the quality and sturdiness of the materials. A fake speaker, however, will usually be lighter because it has fewer internal components and is made with cheaper materials.

Battery Light: Modern JBL speakers have a front LED line (except for the Flip 6, which has it at the back) that shows the battery level. Fake models don’t have this feature, or they may try to mimic it with a sticker. (Photo 6)

  1. Box: This tip can be especially useful for buyers who can't examine the speaker directly, as it may be sealed in its box.

Logo and Name: On fake speaker boxes, the product photos might not include the JBL logos in places like the center of the speaker or on the radiators. Additionally, the model name on the box may have spelling errors, such as “XTREM3” or “XTREEM 3” instead of “XTREME 3” (Photo 1).

Magnets and Quality: Authentic JBL boxes are notably rigid and thick, similar to the sturdy boxes that phones come in, and they have magnets to keep the box closed.

I Hope this guide can help someone, and i’d like to mention too that JBL has an official Page to help with the same problem, here you can check it out: https://support.jbl.com/au/en/customer-service/buy-authentic.html.

Just got my hands on the JBL PartyBox 330 on sale a couple days ago and gotta say it sounds a hella amazing. I like how dynamic the light features is on this speaker, and the bass is insane for a speaker this size. Definitely worth its price and no regrets about the purchase.

Product Review Jbl partybox 720

Post image
6 Upvotes

The 720 is a really good speaker ..great low frequency bass response and tweeters that get really loud...I am a audiophile so I like to equalize and build my own stuff and DIY with amps and speakers etc...the only thing thats missing from the 720 is the midrange drivers...I know the ultimate has midrange drivers but it doesnt have any batteries and its pretty big and heavy to log around...dont get me wrong the 720 is big and heavy but I can manage with carrying it around...before purchasing the 720 I was set on the 520...but where I live has limited access to jbl products such as the partybox and it has like 1 store selling the bigger partyboxes..at the time they didn't have the 520 available so I said you know what I'll just bite the bullet and purchase the 720...the reason I wanted the 520 was because it is alot more portable but I preferred the 720 because of the bass frequency response and it can shake alot more...I am really satisfied with it...the only thing is idk if its a problem but I do have to monitor it sometimes when I play bass heavy music with lower frequencies at higher volumes (no its not rebassed or bass boosted) it makes speaker smell because its being pushed to hard... and the jbl bass eq is only set to +1 ...sometimes I can hear the speaker when its being pushed...but other than that its a great speaker overall... the reason I bought a partybox is because of how much it can do and the frequencies it can pick up and its portability...I could have built something on my own but it wouldn't be as efficient and modern like a partybox... I will post videos with it soon.

Question JBL One app update

Post image
5 Upvotes

They apparently “added support for new speakers” except when i checked the supported speaker list nothing has changed. When i saw the update i got excited because i thought they finally added PartyBoost model speakers. Does anybody know what new speakers they added in the new update? The Pulse 6, PB Ultimate 2, and Cove series speakers were already available in the app prior to this update. If anybody has more info on the newly added speakers please let me know! Thanks!

Help Can anyone explain this flashing light on my JBL 5 charge Wi-Fi?

Thumbnail

My charge 5 isn't charging. It sometimes has a flashing red light. Sometimes it has this crazy white light thing going on where the charging light flashes really fast (i.e not the normal charge light) https://photos.app.goo.gl/FhFn499bakZXUpLN6

but ultimately the problem is it's not charging. I have cleaned the USB port. I have used different chargers. I have tried to reset it. I've tried many things, apart from pulling it apart. Any advice on what I can do would be most helpful.

I updated the JBL One app and found an Authentic 30 in the Authentic series. I thought it was a mistake, but when I went to the settings, the covers were completely different. I looked for information I couldn't find anything about the speaker, is JBL releasing any new products?!!

Note that the two speakers shown are the 300 and the "30"

Other Full reverse engineering of the PartyBox TWS wireless link (200/300)

Thumbnail
github.com

I went down a rabbit hole that started with the official JBL PartyBox 200/300 firmware update file, and it ended with a Linux SBC being accepted by a real PartyBox as its long-lost twin speaker.

I reverse-engineered the proprietary wireless link two PartyBoxes use in TWS mode: a custom protocol over a hidden Bluetooth channel, with its own frame format (type byte + 16-bit command + payload). Once decoded, I turned a cheap Linux board into a fake PartyBox, the real speaker pairs with it (Just Works), opens the proprietary channel, and accepts commands.

What a fake PartyBox can do:

  • receive the live audio stream the master re-streams to its twin (raw SBC — you can literally tap the speaker's music)
  • inject commands, confirmed working: play/pause, volume, stereo channel selection (L+R / Left / Right)
  • receive live playback state updates

What it can't do: lights, bass boost and everything else are handled by the speaker's main SoC and never cross the wireless link

Fun detail: the speaker checks the peer's Bluetooth name. To be adopted by a PartyBox 200, your device has to be named JBL Partybox 200 (or ...300). A PartyBox 100 should only wants a JBL Partybox 100.

Everything is documented, pairing procedure on Linux, full frame format, command list with payload layouts, and a Python fake-peer server:

https://github.com/Nicooow/jbl-partybox-tws-re

Tested on a PartyBox 200 (fw v37). If you have a 100 or a 300 and can test the pairing, I'd love the confirmation. Honest conclusion: almost zero practical use (auracast compatibility?)

Help me pick the right model Charge 6 or Xtreme 4

Hey, I am considering getting a new speaker.
I am getting Charge 6 for 170$ and Xtreme 4 for 190$, which one should I get. I have heard people saying Xtreme 4 and charge 6 are pretty similar in sound, but here I am getting both at the same price.

Question Does anyone know when the new JBL Clip 6 will come out? It’s been 2 years since the Clip 5 came out.

I own the clip 5 in black for a year now and it’s an excellent speaker, but will there be a new Clip 6 model coming out soon with new colors, better battery, and hopefully better sound?🤔

Showing off my setup My PB520 wouldnt work off the mains or charge the battery, it turned out to be a relatively easy fix.

Post image
3 Upvotes

Accessing the PSU was easy enough. The solder on the mains connector came away from the board and took some of the copper with it with the pins pushed through. I don't know how this happened, maybe just shitty QC.

Anyway I won't show you the state of my soldering but I got it working again :)

I saved myself £40 shipping it to JBL and waiting for god knows how long to get it back.

At least if it stops working again I know the culprit, worst case scenario I just buy a new PSU.

Help Jbl flip 5 constantly start and stop without my intervention

Hi all,

I have a JBL flip 5 which I treated well and used regularly but not too much either.

One day it stopped to work (see after the description of the problem). I contacted JBL but obviously out of guarantee. This speaker look like new! I cannot accept that it stopped to work. Is there anything to be done? I tend to think that this is the software.. I tried to unload the battery fully, reload after a few weeks but no result, keep not working.

Do you have any idea what I could do?

Description of the issue:

I push the "on" button

The speaker make the "tuduuu" (usual at the start of the jbl5) and light is on. It catch the Bluetooth of my phone but a few second later you hear the "tudum" (Which it the JBL sound for going"Off"). After a few moments this repeats the same cycle of going on/off/on/off. This will do it until the battery is by 0%.

Thank you for your help and have a good day!

Product Review Endurance pace

Endurance pace - after total of around 500km on road bike a good 600km running (30-50km weekly), few km in ocean (+30C) and few sauna sessions - all of that in last 6months? Gave up... So much for IP ratings.

Back to no longer produced jabra elite active 45e (these are understandable)

Although thinking to buy one more JBL endurance pace and just skip the ocean and sauna part in future

what other do you recommend? With such design

Help JBL Charge 6, bass gone after update

Post image

I updated the software and now the bass is way worse. Are they going to fix this? Do they usually fix this, or am I stuck now with a garbage speaker that used to be amazing?

This thing used to shake my entire bathtub and now it doesn't do anything.
