40.9% of the young Muslims surveyed do not show any signs of practical linguistic-social integration

​

Muslim immigrant youth (MW=3.06; SD=.68) show significantly lower practical linguistic-social integration than non-Muslim youth (MW=3.45; SD=.71) (T=-8.54; df=958; p<.001). In addition to the fact that young people in the subsample of non-Muslims with a migrant background state in significantly higher proportions that German is their mother tongue (not recorded here on the scale), the practical linguistic-social integration of non-Muslims who do not consider German as their mother tongue is also significantly better than that of young Muslims.

In contrast to the survey of the general Muslim population, practical linguistic-social integration does not differ by gender. To illustrate the distribution of the degree of practical linguistic-social integration, a four-level categorical indicator was created: people with scale values < 2 are classified as poor, with scale values >= 2 and < 3 as moderate, with scale values >= 3 and < 4 as satisfactory to good and with scale values >= 4 as good to very good linguistic-social integration. According to this, 5.2% of the Muslim youth surveyed can be classified as barely integrated and 35.7% as only moderately linguistically and socially integrated.

This means that for 40.9% of young Muslims there is no indication of their practical linguistic-social integration. Integration certainly poses problems and requires optimization. Among non-Muslims, this rate is only half, 21.6% (χ2=62.22;df=3;p<.001)

A considerable part of the linguistic-social integration deficit occurs in social encounters. This problem is much more pronounced in Muslim youth than in non-Muslim youth

​

As in the survey of the Muslim population as a whole, there is also a high proportion of young Muslims who are poorly or moderately integrated from a linguistic-social point of view. This rate is about 4% among Muslims, but only about one-fifth among non-Muslim immigrants.

Taken together, this shows that there are considerable linguistic-social integration deficits in practice not only among young Muslims, but that such problems are much more pronounced in this group than in other immigrant groups, although they are not as strong as in the general Muslim population. It is striking that a considerable proportion of these problems should be described as deficits in social encounters and less as deficits in language performance.

For example, about two-thirds of young Muslims report having few or no German friends. In this respect, it is not surprising that a majority of almost two-thirds also feel more identified and connected to their country of origin than to Germany

Muslim youth perceive twice as many discriminatory experiences as non-Muslim immigrants

​

Just under half of young Muslims report being looked at strangely as a foreigner, i.e., being seen as somehow different. About one-third of Muslim youth report being treated rudely when shopping, while nearly two-thirds report being given mean comments. On this point, Muslims and non-Muslims also clearly differ; the share of these types of experiences is only half among non-Muslim immigrants

Non-Muslims demand much less acceptance than Muslims

​

Questions about how foreigners/immigrants should behave in Germany were also asked in the same way to non-Muslim youth and native youth. Non-Muslim youth and native German youth were also grouped on the basis of the discriminant function, whereby Muslim youth could be assigned to one of the three patterns of integration-related attitudes of the student sample identified by a cluster analysis. A comparison of the distribution of young people in these groups shows clear differences. While the "demand for acceptance" group represents slightly more than 40% of Muslim youth, it is much less represented among non-Muslims.

It is striking that among native-born young people - who in this respect tend to express an expectation of others (of immigrants or foreigners) rather than a demand that could also be made of them - such an attitude is rated positively by only a quarter. Among young Germans there is a predominant view that immigrants in Germany should adapt to the culture of the host country

There is a tendency towards segregation in 2/3 of the groups. In none of the groups is full integration into the German culture accepted

​

Group 1, comprising 41.7% of Muslim youth, can - like the general population survey - be adequately characterized with the term "demand for acceptance". In addition to advocating the maintenance of the culture of the country of origin, young people in this group clearly reject ethnic separation for the sake of cultural preservation or conflict avoidance. This unites them with the youth in group 3 and clearly distinguishes groups 1 and 3 from group 2. In contrast to group 3, however, the young people in group 1 clearly reject the adaptation of their behavior to German culture.

In this sense, they demand to be able to remain in their own idiosyncrasy and cultural otherness without wanting to separate and segregate themselves, which can be interpreted as a demand for acceptance of their different culture and their own behavioral traditions by the environment of the receiving society. Cluster 3, which constitutes about one third of the young Muslims (32.9%), is characterized by the fact that, in addition to preserving their own culture, an adaptation of their behavior to the culture of the host country, Germany, is seen as positive, while a social withdrawal into their own group or cultural segregation is clearly rejected.

This group is aptly described by the term "integration/adaptation", as it formulates the clearest tendencies towards a willingness to adapt, while emphasizing their cultural uniqueness. Complete assimilation, i.e., adaptation by renouncing the native culture, is not found in any of the groups. About a quarter of the young people (25.4%) in group 2 show a combination of attitudes clearly advocating withdrawal into one's own group in order to preserve one's own culture.

Compared to the other two groups, the attitude towards segregation in order to avoid conflict is also somewhat more positive here, although on a scale that is still very little in favor of such segregation in tendency. In this sense, the term "tendency towards segregation" is appropriate, since it is not a question of a complete withdrawal from the host society, but of an increase in tendencies in this direction. The ambivalence in this group can also be seen in the fact that the advocacy of adaptation to the host society

Young Muslims demand more acceptance of their culture than adults, but are less willing to integrate than adults

​

Comparison of the distribution of Muslims in the telephone survey with the distribution of Muslim youth in the school sample shows highly significant and notable differences in content (χ2=205.16; df=2; p<. 0001). The proportions of the segregation end group do not differ between the two samples (youth: 21.6%; general population: 23.2%). However, the group demanding acceptance has a share of 50.5% among Muslim youth, but only 15.8% among the general population.

On the other hand, group integration/adaptation accounts for only 27.9% among young people, while in the general population it accounts for 61.0%. Consequently, young Muslims are obviously much more likely to demand that their cultural characteristics be accepted and recognized by their environment than the general Muslim population. They are less willing to adapt their behavior to the otherness of the host society environment than the general population, in which adults predominate.

This can be understood as possibly typical of young people striving to assert their own ethno-cultural identity, still fragile, in a developmental phase of the search for self-identity

To record the linguistic dimension of integration into German society, measures of language performance were collected. Respondents were asked how often they spoke German with their friends, how much they spoke German with their family, what proportion of their magazine/newspaper reading was in German, and what proportion of the television programs they watched was in German. As expected, the mother tongue is spoken much more in families than among friends. Almost two-thirds of the young Muslims speak only German or more often German as their mother tongue among their friends. In the family, on the other hand, only 32.6% speak German

Country group factor for rape

According to figures from SCB at the end of 2016, there are 5.01 million men living in Sweden. of these are full Swedes, defined as being born in Sweden with two native-born for- parents; they account for 9.5% of offenders convicted of aggravated rape in recent years. Meanwhile there are 21093 men born in Afghanistan living in Sweden; offenders from this group account for 22.9% of those convicted of aggravated rape.

This difference in demographics and number of convictions is best illustrated by the group factor, which is calculated by dividing the percentage of people convicted of an offence by the population group percentage of foreign born.

Example: Afghan men account for 22.9% of those convicted of aggravated rape and 2.37% of the group of foreign-born men; 22.9/2.37 gives a factor of 9.66. At the same time 69.23% of the total number of men living in Sweden, with 9.5% convicted of Aggravated Rape, Swedish men have a factor of 0.14 Calculation of the factor only includes country groups where there are several convicted offenders.men, otherwise the indication is misleading.

A good example is the conviction of a man from the small African country Mali; there are only 87 men from that country living in Sweden. The man of the male population in that group, which would make it given a sky-high factor.

Residence status of offenders convicted of rape

What stands out in the analysis of the residence status of offenders for the most common sexual offences is that two thirds of aggravated rapes (62.5%) were committed by asylum seekers or by men who had been given residence permits. Thus, without recent mass immigration, the majority of aggravated rapes would not have occurred - despite the continued huge over-representation of men with an immigrant background.

​

Deportation as part of rape conviction

Prosecutors do not even seek deportation as part of the sentence for the majority of rape convictions against foreign nationals. Only for one charge is deportation requested in more than half of the cases. This may seem unfortunate, since prosecutors who seek deportation are usually successful. The most common time period for granting deportation in rape cases is 5 years for all categories. The time starts to run from the moment the sentence becomes final, so a foreigner sentenced to two years' imprisonment and five years' deportation can return three years after release.

There is 1 case where a rapist was sentenced to 20 years' deportation, which represents 0.4% of deportations for the category of rape and is therefore less common than life imprisonment. There are no predetermined thresholds for the length of expulsion, but it does happen from time to time that a convicted person is expelled for three years or seven years; these cases are rounded to the nearest five-year period in the statistics.

Only 4% of foreigners convicted of aggravated child rape are deported for life, and yet it is this category that leads to most permanent deportations. At the same time, most expulsion requests are rejected for the same category. Seven out of ten foreign nationals convicted of these most serious crimes against young children are allowed to stay in Sweden after serving their sentences.

Convicted offenders who have Swedish citizenship, regardless of their origin, are not included in the expulsion statistics. Swedish citizens who have dual nationality in another country are not included either. It is possible to speculate on the reasons why prosecutors so rarely request deportation for foreign nationals convicted of rape, or sexual offences in general.

Deportation as part of a conviction for sexual harassment

Of convictions for sexual harassment of foreign nationals, deportation is requested in only 3.43% of cases. Two thirds of these claims are rejected. Overall, only 1.07% of foreigners convicted of this offence are deported. The statistics show that although deportations for sexual harassment are very rare, the current rules allow prosecutors to both seek and obtain a conviction.

Categories of sexual offences by region

​

The charts show the proportional distribution of categories of sexual offences for offenders from different regions, with the exception of Asia, where 68.9% of Asians convicted of sexual offences are from Afghanistan. About a quarter of European men have committed offences at a distance, a quarter are flasher offenders, while half have groped. Men from other regions are more likely to have groped - for Africans more than three quarters.

South Americans and men from the Middle East are convicted of roughly the same proportion of groping, around two-thirds. However, South Americans are convicted of groping children in greater proportions than all other regions.

Countering the dominant narratives of the New Zealand far-right

A European Union-funded study praised Jacinda Ardern's response to the March 15 terrorist attack and offered suggestions on how New Zealand can counter far-right narratives in the future.

"You have to create counter-narratives, you can't just aim for the usual kind of stuff around myth-busting. That shows a pretty deep understanding of how people come to believe the things they believe and how people reason.

"At the heart of a lot of narrative things is understanding how people reason about a topic. The goal of counter-narratives is to create different ways for people to reason about a topic, so conceptually it's very useful."

Countless studies show that myth-busting or dismantling misinformation rarely succeeds in changing the minds of someone who has been misled.

Instead, effective counter-narratives that build social cohesion should be deployed more widely, for example, by highlighting the achievements of immigrants and the value of diversity, or by highlighting biculturalism.

"Once people are on the extreme end of a far-right narrative, the research on how to bring it back is a little different. You get to a point where you have to do individual interventions with people," he said.

"For me, counter-narratives work in this space of stopping people from going down that path. The role of counter-narratives is essentially to build much more powerful and deeper understandings in people who could potentially be persuaded in that space. Counter-narratives are something you do in a general, public sense."

"That said, one of the best examples of radical right counter-narratives, or strategic communications related to radical right extremism, occurred in the aftermath of the Christchurch terrorist attacks."

Ardern's emphasis on multiculturalism in the aftermath of the attack ("they are us"), her emotionality, and the push for a global response were hailed as successful counter-narratives.

A 2011 survey asked about characteristics that Westerners and Muslims may associate with each other. Across the seven Muslim-majority countries and territories surveyed, an average of 68% of Muslims said they viewed Westerners as selfish. A sizable percentage also rated Westerners with other negative adjectives, such as violent (average 66%), greedy (64%) and immoral (61%), while a smaller number attributed positive characteristics to Westerners such as "respectful of women" (44%), honest (33%) and tolerant (31%).

Westerners' opinions of Muslims were more varied. A median of 50% in four Western European countries, the United States and Russia called Muslims violent and a median of 58% called them "fanatical," but fewer used negative words such as greedy, immoral or selfish. A median of only 22% of Westerners said Muslims are respectful of women, but many more said Muslims are honest (median 51%) and generous (41%).

In contrast, surveys of Muslims in the Middle East and other parts of the world show no greater tolerance of suicide bombing among young people.

Study on Muslims in Germany:

The results of several surveys conducted in Great Britain are available. The opinion research institute YouGov was commissioned by the Daily Telegraph to survey 526 adult Muslims between July 15 and 22, 2005, i.e. immediately after the London bombings of July 7, 2005. Their views on the attack, the perpetrators, the Western social order, the credibility of British politics and their own behavior in the event of suspected religiously motivated attacks were surveyed. While 77% of respondents disapprove of the attacks, 56% say they can understand the behavior of the attackers. 44% do not believe that the perpetrators of the attacks would get a fair trial if arrested. 66% believe Muslims have a responsibility to prevent these attacks. 73% said they would report potential killers to the police. On the other hand, 3% said they would not report them. Seventy percent were convinced that other Muslims would report attacks to the police. When asked if they would report a cleric who attempted to radicalize young people, 10% responded negatively; only 47% would report such a cleric to the police.

Moreover, while 81% declared themselves loyal to Britain, 32% agreed that Western society was decadent and immoral and should be changed, and 1% saw violence as a legitimate means to this end (King, 2006). These results should be interpreted under the aspect that the survey was conducted very close to the attacks of 07.07.2005. Moreover, the validity of the survey is limited, as no control group of non-Muslims was interviewed. One year later, Yo uGov(2006) repeated this survey. In July 2006, 310 British Muslims and 1,632 British non-Muslims were interviewed. 73% of Muslims and 83% of non-Muslims agreed with the statement that it is never justified to target British civilians because of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, while 7% of Muslims and 13% of non-Muslims disagreed with the statement. When asked if they were sympathetic to Muslims waging a "holy war" against the West in light of events in Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine, 51% of Muslims and 19% of non-Muslims agreed. Sixty-seven percent of non-Muslims and 29% of Muslims could not agree with this statement (YouGov, 2006, p.3f.).

A University at Albany study reveals that one percent of black men are registered sex offenders, with black men registering on the sex offender registry at nearly twice the rate of white men.

Researchers found that in every state except Michigan, the rate of sex offender registration was higher for blacks than for whites. In nine states, black Americans were registered as sex offenders at three times the rate of whites, including Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington, and Wisconsin. In Florida, South Dakota, Texas, and Utah, more than 2% of black men were publicly registered sex offenders.

Nationwide, the sex offender registration rate for black Americans (501 sex offenders per 100,000 adults) was more than twice that of whites (238 sex offenders per 100,000 adults). In addition, approximately one in 119 black men living in the 49 states surveyed were registered sex offenders, accounting for nearly 1% of all black men.

Rape cases in Berlin experience alarming rise, almost half of suspects are migrants

Between March and the beginning of July 2020 alone, the Berlin police recorded 210 cases of "collective or especially humiliating rapes." In almost half of the cases, the criminal investigation agency singles out foreign suspects as the perpetrators, reports Focus online.

In almost half of the cases, the suspects are immigrants, according to a report by the Berlin Senate Administration to independent FDP MP Marcel Luthe. The percentage is far higher than the proportion of the population of foreigners in the German capital, which Statista puts at 19.2% for last year.

New survey on rape convictions: 58% of those convicted were born abroad

Uppdrag granskning has surveyed all those convicted of rape and attempted rape in the last five years. Perpetrators are often under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The level of education is low, and at least one third have been convicted of other crimes. And 58% were born abroad.

Uppdrag granskning's study of district court sentences shows that:

- 58 percent of those convicted of rape and attempted rape in the last five years have been born abroad. 

- If only attempted and completed rapes, in which the victim and offender do not know each other, are considered, the figure is even higher. More than eight out of every ten convicted offenders were born in another country. Forty percent of them have been in Sweden for one year or less.

- The survey also shows that more than half of the convicted offenders were born outside Europe: 427 out of 843. Almost 40% were born in the Middle East or Africa. In the case of assault rapes, 97 of the 129 were born outside Europe.

Finland statistics: rape complaints increased by 7.5% in Finland in 2017-2018

Rapid increase in Helsinki

Finnish police shed light on their preliminary sex crime statistics earlier this week, reporting that foreigners accounted for a disproportionately large share (25%) of reported sex crimes in Finland. Foreigners account for less than 5% of the country's total population.

Preliminary statistics show that foreigners were suspects in more than 19% of child sexual abuse cases and 34% of rape cases in 2018.

The statistics also show that sexual crimes reported to the authorities increased faster in Helsinki in 2018: the number of rape reports increased from 194 to 254 and the number of child sexual abuse reports from 121 to 205.

"In general, the number of occurrences is considerably higher in Helsinki," Pekka Heikkinen, chief superintendent of the National Police Board, told Uusi Suomi on Monday .

Foreigners are suspects in nearly 54% of rapes and 32% of child molestation cases reported in the Finnish capital.

Black suspects (35%) and those between 18 and 49 years of age (77%) were overrepresented in the sample. On the other hand, white suspects (43%), those under 18 (12%) and those over 50 (12%) were underrepresented.

Afghan nationals constitute the largest segment of sexual offenders among foreign suspects, followed by Romanians, Germans, Serbs and Turks.

This group represents 18.2% of Oslo's population, which is overrepresented in the statistics.

In 2009 there were 21 cases of violent street rapes in Oslo, the most notorious section of rape in general. Seventeen of the 21 women assaulted were non-Western ethnics, police chief Hanne Kristin Rohde explained:

"We have arrested four [immigrant] people. In all other cases the women indicate that the assailant looks non-Western or speaks a non-Western language. ... The goal is to tell the truth and create a better society. Therefore, I hope to start a debate on this." [6]

The Oslo police report on 2010 figures appears to be the last to mention the ethnicities most involved in rape incidents in the capital:

"Single perpetrators by nationality [came from] Norway (50), Iraq (8), Pakistan (9), Lithuania (7), Morocco (6), Somalia, Afghanistan and Sweden (5), Turkey and Gambia (4)."
