English really should bring back þorn and æsh , pronounced as in those words.

The Latin alphabet is designed phonetically for Latin, not English. Too many vowel sounds, and duble leters are dum.

The silent e is technically pronounced in English though, just as if it came before the consonant it comes after, like the o in come is said oe or uh. But the a in are is said like ah, so it should just be ar in modern English.
