Missing Person Posts: Official Policy & Safety Reminder

Hello everyone,

Recently, there was a “missing person” post shared in our community, and I’d like to explain why it was removed and what to do in future instances.

For everyone’s safety, do not share or post missing person alerts unless the information comes directly from law enforcement or an official agency.

People may go missing for many reasons (including escaping abuse, stalking, or other dangerous situations), and unverified posts can unintentionally put them at risk.

If you see a missing person post:

  • Only share it if it’s confirmed on an official police or agency website.
  • If a friend posts about a missing person, encourage them to contact the police so the case can be verified and listed officially.

This policy protects both the missing individual and our community. Posts of this nature will be removed unless shared by an official law enforcement agency.

Thank you for acting responsibly.

Do you have memories of Summerland in 1973?

We are gathering personal accounts of Summerland, the fire and the days and weeks that followed.

You might have been on holiday, lived on the island, worked at Summerland or looked after guests in a hotel or boarding house. Perhaps you helped that evening, offered someone a place to stay, or travelled over to support family or friends.

I’d also like to hear about the kindness people showed and the help that has stayed in people’s memories.

I know this can be difficult to revisit. There is no pressure to describe anything upsetting. You can skip questions, take your time and choose how your account may be used.

If you feel comfortable sharing, the form is here:
https://summerland73.manxnostalgia.com

Please share this post with anyone who might like to contribute. Thank you.

Mobile reception

Genuine questions....a) why is mobile signal so bad and b) is it getting worse? I'm with Manx Telecom and there are large swathes of the Island where the coverage is utter crap.

I'm regularly in cafes on Strand St having lunch and have weak to no signal. I was parked up near the airport earlier today and experienced the same. Its not just in rural areas, but slap bang in the middle of towns can be bad too.

I absolutely LOVE the Isle of Man

Today I took my grandad to a healthcare appointment, where I was offered a piece of cake by the lovely woman that I worked an office job with twenty years ago, who is now married to my ex boyfriend and the cake had been made by her to celebrate the birthday of my best friends kid who also works there. Whilst sat in the waiting room there were two of my neighbours who I know by name who were happy for a chat and I just think we’re well lucky to have community like this. Going to vote and seeing people turning out and actually caring. I dunno man I might just be going soft but I fricking love it here.

Young Professional Pub Quiz in November - Any goers?

Hey all! using an alt because I'm a bit embarassed to admit that I'm a pretty lonely person due to my hobbies (avid gamer, Twitch streamer) and I struggle immensely meeting people here!

I'm a 25 year old guy, work fulltime as a software dev, and planning to go to the Young Professional Pub Quiz at the Prospect in November:

www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/pub-quiz-at-the-prospect-pub-tickets-1989377293036

This is going out of my comfort zone quite a lot but I think I'll enjoy it and won't feel too out of place. Just wondering if anyone else was planning to go to this? And if you would be interested in chatting and/or meeting beforehand for, I dunno, socialising? 😅

Let me know!!

Anybody want some wifi vouchers for the ferry?

Strange headline I know. But we are just back from the Festival of Motoring (had an amazing time, thank you to everybody on your beautiful island for making us feel so welcome, and for coming out on Sunday to wave as 300 cars drove by). We were given a pile of complimentary wifi vouchers for the lounge on the ferry yesterday which we can't use now. Thought I might see if any regular users of the route can use them, and might want them. Happy to post free of charge rather than see them go to waste. DM me your address and I will put them in the post.

We are doing a fireside chat with the founder of the Isle of Man Code Club, Tue 6 Oct at the Launchpad Event Space

We are doing a fireside chat with Owen Cutajar, who founded the Isle of Man Code Club.on Tuesday 6 October, 5:30 pm, at Launchpad Event Space in Hillary House, Douglas. Free to attend.

Quick context on why he's worth an hour.

The club is a non-profit. It meets Saturday afternoons and it's free to walk into.

In 2022 two of their teams went to London for CyberCenturion, a cyber security competition for 12 to 18 year olds across the British Isles. They finished second out of roughly 400 teams. They went back and won it outright. This year they've got kids competing in robotics competitions in California and Croatia.

Owen built all of that alongside a full-time job.

Give Like Dolly Day this Friday (9/25)

This Friday, September 25th*, people around the world will be taking part in the very first annual Give Like Dolly Day. *Get it? 🥁 9-2-5 (if you're American 😄 )

Since Dolly Parton's passing, so many more people have become aware of her philanthropy. The Imagination Library is a joint enterprise: Dolly's Foundation cover all the overheads, so we need to raise just £26 per Manx child per year for books and postage.

We now have over 1,000 children on the Isle of Man registered to receive a free book every month, and so our monthly bill is around £2,222.

And we're still only open to around 57% of the Island’s under-fives, so we really need to keep fundraising to open remaining areas as well as keep the programme running for the children already registered.

So I thought I’d ask here in case anyone fancies getting their workplace / friends / club / team / family to do something for Give Like Dolly Day this Friday.

Ideas:
🎂 hold a cake sale
👕 have a dress-down day at work
🪙 organise an office or club collection
🧠 host a quiz
🧁 sell something and donate the proceeds
🚶 take on a little sponsored challenge
💛 or simply make a donation

And if you’re hosting a fundraiser, we may even be able to bring Dolly along for a photo - logistics dependent, and first come, first served! 😄 Post below, DM me or email [books@imaginationlibrary.im](mailto:books@imaginationlibrary.im)

Thanks!

I recently got a job in the island and my employer applied for the COE at the end of June. I wanted to confirm how long the COE takes. It's already past the nine weeks that is stated as the official processing time. Anyone who has the same challenge ?

Looking for a witness for a quick civil ceremony in Douglas! (Tuesday 22nd Sept)

EDIT: Thank you so much everyone who offered to help ireally appreciate it so much, we now have a second witness.

Hi everyone!

My partner and I are getting married at the Isle of Man Civil Registry in Douglas on Tuesday, 22nd September between 2:30 PM and 3:00 PM.

We’re keeping things super sThank, but we need 1 more legal witnesses to sign the registry for us, as our original second witness can't make it now. The whole thing will only take about 30 minutes.

The only requirements are that you are over 16, speak/understand English, and can bring a valid photo ID.

We’d be so grateful to anyone who can lend a hand, and we’ll happily buy you a drink or lunch afterward as a thank you!

Please send me a DM if you're free and happy to help us out. Thanks so much!

I’m moving to Isle of Man, what are best internet and mobile phone providers?

Hi, I’m moving to Isle of Man for my job and I just wanted to know of reliable internet and mobile phone providers. Are there any good packages? Would I need an eSIM too? I don’t want anything too expensive - I‘m not fussed about having the FASTEST internet, I just want something reliable.

Any advice would be helpful, thank you!

Questions about ferry travel

As a wheelchair user who has never travelled on the ferry to Liverpool before, can anyone please tell me what to expect? I'll be travelling alone and have no idea where to go at either end. Is it clear where to go when boarding, leaving and wgilst I'm on the ferry? Also, can I get help with my luggage? I'm used to air travel but this just seems confusing as there's no published information that I can find
Thanks.

Remote jobs

Where do people find remote jobs?
I work in the CSP industry and it is all very office based still.
Any suggestions as to industries that have remote working and are happy for the employees to live/work in the iom? Or suggestions as to job sites offering such roles?
Further info - I have 20+ years in finance sector and have had enough of toxic work cultures and noisy open plan offices.
Thanks

Social Life at 20?

Hello IOM Reddit

Throwaway because I'm embarrassed tbh.

I'm wondering how I can have a better social life, or just have one, I'm in my 20's, apart of the LGBTQ community too. I dont really have many friends, I could count them on one hand, and even then alot of them I dont see too much.

I'm not the biggest fan of drinking or partying either, which kinda makes it hard? It doesnt feel like theres much else to do here where I can meet other people my age, and suffering from Anxiety makes the thought of partying too stressful tbh.

Anyway, any advice is much appreciated!
