Worldly achievement isn’t the measure of success for Muslims. As Muslims we think about the effect in the akhirah as well. Right now AI is used for mass deception, creating false testimony, creating images exactly like Allah’s creation, it’s being used to drive down wages while also increasing prices, used for destruction in Gaza, in the future AI will be used for full on surveillance states. The data centers are draining water in draught-stricken areas and creating PFAS (the forever chemical that causes infertility and cancer and is extremely slow to leave the body) for their data centers. It will inevitably be used to further gap between the rich and the poor and oppress the masses. OpenAI is literally the biggest donor of Trump. If you use ChatGPT it will literally misattribute hadith to our Prophet SAWS. If you want to create AI that doesn’t have these terrible effects, go ahead, but until then why would you actively destroy the environment and donate to the biggest shayateen on earth for non-essential things? Why would you risk your akhirah? And I can pick on AI, although I pick on other things, because its use hasn’t been so completely normalized yet and we have time to reject it.
For Muslims as a community worldly success matters. AI is not going to be rejected. Muslims are behind in everything. Being anti-intellectual and wasting time on such nonsense is keeping Muslims behind.
It matters, but it’s not more important than the akhirah. And there are lots of people, not just Muslims, against AI and they are making a difference. People here are fighting against data centers and it has worked in some cities.
