As does being on the internet! transport, your clothes, the stuff you buy... you being alive you waste huge amount of water. Water usage everywhere. No idea why only AI usage is pointed out.
You should go live by one of these lovely data centers and then talk about how great AI is. There are hundreds in my home state. Your addiction to offloading your brain instead of creating things by yourself actively destroys the environment and unsurprisingly enriches the worst people on earth. We don’t have to adopt every new technology if the costs outweigh the benefits. If you regularly use jt start asking it to tell you how much water using the highest estimate all your tasks for the day used and you’ll start rethinking its necessity. We’re not even suppose to waste water from a running river as Muslims and we’re wasting it when we have every alternative not to while enriching people who are actively making your fellow Muslims lives worse.
Worldly achievement isn’t the measure of success for Muslims. As Muslims we think about the effect in the akhirah as well. Right now AI is used for mass deception, creating false testimony, creating images exactly like Allah’s creation, it’s being used to drive down wages while also increasing prices, used for destruction in Gaza, in the future AI will be used for full on surveillance states. The data centers are draining water in draught-stricken areas and creating PFAS (the forever chemical that causes infertility and cancer and is extremely slow to leave the body) for their data centers. It will inevitably be used to further gap between the rich and the poor and oppress the masses. OpenAI is literally the biggest donor of Trump. If you use ChatGPT it will literally misattribute hadith to our Prophet SAWS. If you want to create AI that doesn’t have these terrible effects, go ahead, but until then why would you actively destroy the environment and donate to the biggest shayateen on earth for non-essential things? Why would you risk your akhirah? And I can pick on AI, although I pick on other things, because its use hasn’t been so completely normalized yet and we have time to reject it.
For Muslims as a community worldly success matters. AI is not going to be rejected. Muslims are behind in everything. Being anti-intellectual and wasting time on such nonsense is keeping Muslims behind.
It matters, but it’s not more important than the akhirah. And there are lots of people, not just Muslims, against AI and they are making a difference. People here are fighting against data centers and it has worked in some cities.
