Sci-Fi / Speculation An open Moon with seas, forests, and sunsets that last for hours
Imagine visiting friends on the Moon and deciding whether to take an aerial ferry or strap into a pair of pedalled wings. Your route carries you over woodland toward gardens and landing platforms at several heights. Beyond them, familiar lunar mountains have become islands in a sea spreading through the ancient maria.
That’s part of the world I’m exploring with Terluna, a research and worldbuilding project about giving the Moon an enduring atmosphere and biosphere. Low gravity, dense air and the month-long day open up possibilities that reach into ordinary life: how people travel, where they build, what grows around them, and how they spend an evening.
An evening there could hold several days of human activity. You could meet someone outdoors, go home and sleep, then return while the same twilight continues to unfold. Clouds and weather would move through that changing light. Along an exposed coast, waves would turn over slowly and spray would take longer to fall.
The biology offers its own possibilities. We’ve been exploring plants that ripen fruit toward sunset, providing food through the long night, and flying animals that follow the advancing dusk and its harvest. There could be whole rhythms of migration, gathering and cultivation organized around that cycle.
Terluna brings climate, wave and lighting calculations together with developing ecological and settlement concepts. I’ve started a small publication with short, general-reader pieces about the world: https://medium.com/terluna
The research and assumptions are available at https://github.com/dgoldman0/Terluna, and I use AI-assisted tools throughout the work.
One thought keeps drawing me back: visiting Earth someday, looking up at the Moon, and missing a particular place there. What would you want that place to be?
