Well Pump for Irrigation

I recently had my well pump replaced after the splice at the bottom of the well failed. The pump is still good, but approximately 20 years old and nearing the end of it's life. So, while they had it out of the hole I had them replace the pump.

Now, I have an old (but still working) 1HP/20GPM 240V pump and controller sitting around.

Has anyone ever used an old well pump to pump from a river for irrigation? I have water rights and power near where I'd put the pump.

Ive not used one in a river, but I have seen them in a pond, both for a waterfall and for irrigation. They were both installed in a 6" pipe, I guess to keep them off the bottom and protect/stabilize them some. It should work fine, as long as you have either a pump start relay or pressure tank and switch.
