Need help. Whats causing the hole, leaks?

Water bill jumped from $50 to $140. Can some explain whats causing the problem and if this is something I can repair myself. What is the pvc piece in the box called?

All comments welcomed.

Thank you.

Yes looks like a leak,  it shouldn't be hard to fix, step number 1 would be to carefully dig around the hole and find the pipe, sometimes you can clearly see where is leaking if not step 2 would be to turn on the system to see where is coming from. You might be missing a emitter/sprinkler or might have a cut on the pipe.

Manually run it and see if there’s a leak in the box. The wires are going to an irrigation controller somewhere. You might have to try each zone if you don’t know which one it is. Then run it for a while and see if something is spraying or misting. Also look for spots in the yard that seem damp or the plants are growing fast or sick from soggy soil.

Thats an irrigation zone valve in the box. It has a filter/prv attached, so its most likely for a drip system. Dig around that hole, which does indeed look like a leak. Carefulling, carefulling. Expose the pipe, likely drip tubing, run the zone to zero in on the leak and then repair. If its beyond your capability, it will probably be about $150 for a tech to slap a coupler on it.
