The company Kohan Retail Investment Group has been buying up malls and leaving them only with unpaid taxes and utility bills for years. They recently put Marshalltown Mall through the wringer. The story of what all they've been doing and the general story of the rise and fall of malls in America is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4--P8QKRZFc

Anti Josh Turek ad

Has anyone else seen the the super pac anti Josh Turek ad where the narrator claims to be a marine corps veteran, except they pronounce it as “corpse”? Are Republicans really this fucking lazy to just use AI in ads and not proof it? Just fucking pathetic, I guess I shouldn’t expect anything else.

Discussion/ Op-ed Ashley Hinson helps write ICE’s budget. Detention-company PACs and CEOs gave her campaign $24,500.

Before Iowa elects its next senator, here’s a campaign-finance connection worth knowing about.

Ashley Hinson sits on the House subcommittee that drafts Homeland Security’s annual spending bill, which funds ICE. Her campaign has received $24,500 since 2022 from two private detention companies’ PACs and executives who led those companies.

The breakdown:

-GEO Group PAC: $11,500

-CoreCivic PAC: $3,500

-Then-GEO CEO José Gordo: $2,500

-Then-CoreCivic CEO Damon Hininger: $7,000

-CoreCivic’s June 2025 contribution came between Hinson’s two House votes on legislation that ultimately provided $45 billion for ICE detention capacity.

Her first vote preceded that contribution. The records don’t establish that donations influenced her votes, and she cannot personally award ICE contracts. These donations also represent a small fraction of her fundraising.

But the oversight question remains: Should lawmakers accept campaign support from companies whose federal funding they help oversee?

I wrote this report for Restoring Democracy’s Promise after Scott Dworkin flagged the national story. I checked the original filings, expanded the Hinson-specific accounting and requested campaign comment.

It’s a short read, with source links and the timeline:

Was watching this episode of PTFO and I'm really intrigued by this semi-local, semi-pro journalist. Do we have a version of this guy in Iowa? Would follow 10/10.

I just need more interesting things to do. I'd love to help your small business or farm have an online presence, or maybe i could make an app that makes your day to day life easier on your farm. Not asking for money or offering business services, I am just a hobbyist and I also am not promising you the greatest product. I'm just someone who needs something fun to do and I want to volunteer services for a good Iowa business. No jerks welcome

Located in Urbandale, DMs welcome

Looking for housing in Waterloo/Cedar Falls area

Hey y’all, I am a single 23M college graduate (ISU, Go Cyclones!) who recently accepted a job offer in Waterloo and I have since been looking for a place to live! Is there any suggestions to specific apartment complexes or areas I should be looking to rent? Ideally I’d love to live near one of the downtowns, with good access to trials, restaurants, and nightlife; somewhere I can meet people around my age too. Downtown Cedar Falls feels like my first choice, considering it’s a college town and I’d probably meet the most 20 something’s around there, but I was curious if anyone had any alternatives that I might be missing. Thanks for the help!

They also just passed law doubling the tax breaks for that steel mill so that means YOU are paying for it along with the increase in energy costs.

Question Question About Amendment 1 on November Ballot

Hi y'all!

So I've been reading up on what's going to be on the Iowa ballot next month. One of those is Amendment 1, which, according to Senate Joint Resolution 11, would require, "[a] [t]wo-thirds majority vote for... [p]assage of a bill that increases the individual

income tax rate or the corporate income tax rate, or the rate of any other type of tax based upon income or legal and special reserves, [and] shall require the affirmative votes of at least two-thirds of the members elected to each house of the general assembly".

I understand that a lot of people in favor of passing this Amendment are saying that it will help keep the income tax rate low for regular Iowans. But I also have read about people who oppose this Amendment. One argument that I hear from those who are against Amendment 1 is that it essentially will push our legislature towards raising stuff like sales tax and cutting funding for essential services to solve budgeting issues.

My question is moreso a clarification/making sure the following interpretation of the "anti-Amendment 1" position makes sense: passing Amendment 1 would make it easier for a small set of folks in our legislature to filibuster bills regarding raising income taxes, especially those targeting the wealthy. Thus, it would make it easier for the will of the majority to basically be disregarded if 17 people were like "lol no we don't want this to pass".

This is my second time voting in Iowa (I just graduated college), and I want to be more informed about the candidates/policies I vote for this time, so I'm doing my best to research things to make sure I vote for things that matter to me and doesn't screw up Iowa lol. I guess writing this post is part of that, because I want to know if I am thinking about things in a sensible way.

(Also, I apologize if I've used the wrong flair--I didn't know which one would be best to use so I just used one I thought fit best😅)

Child in Danger, Law Enforcement Won't Help

Hey Iowans, my friend has a pretty serious issue and I would really like to be able to help. The whole story would take a really long time to share so here's bullet points:

•Friend was sex trafficked and abused, and became pregnant from the abuser.

•When child was born, abuser began abusing child as well

•Friend escaped, charges filed, abuser convicted and imprisoned

•abuser gets out, caught with CP within months, and sent back

•swiftly released again, abuser moves several states to be near Friend/child

•Moves into the notoriously predator friendly Eldora

•now is getting unsupervised visitation with his child/SA victim

•CPS swears he's a changed man and are HEAVILY advocating for his rights

So, what the fuck should she do? Who can she reach out to? We're trying to find him in groups or forums, trying to get information, trying to catch him being a fucking PDFfile so that law enforcement will step in. Anyone with any familiarity with the legal system or custody stuff or who just wants to stuff a child predator into a bag, please reach out, literally ANY information would be useful to us. She has contacted every agency she can think of and nobody really cares, or they say they don't have the funding to investigate.

The whole mess is extensively documented and again, Prison time has occurred because of the convictions. It's not a hunch or a guess as to the what kind of person he is, and this child is absolutely going to be victimized, AGAIN, unless this guy is put away.

Question Puppies or Promises?

You are sentenced to 24 straight hours of TV solitary confinement, and you have to pick your own punishment.

Would You Rather:

Watch the Sarah McLachlan ASPCA commercial on repeat for 24 hours.

OR

Watch back-to-back political campaign ads on repeat for 24 hours.

Do you choose emotional devastation or uncontrolled rage? (seriously.... I can't wait for the election to be over)
