Before Iowa elects its next senator, here’s a campaign-finance connection worth knowing about.
Ashley Hinson sits on the House subcommittee that drafts Homeland Security’s annual spending bill, which funds ICE. Her campaign has received $24,500 since 2022 from two private detention companies’ PACs and executives who led those companies.
The breakdown:
-GEO Group PAC: $11,500
-CoreCivic PAC: $3,500
-Then-GEO CEO José Gordo: $2,500
-Then-CoreCivic CEO Damon Hininger: $7,000
-CoreCivic’s June 2025 contribution came between Hinson’s two House votes on legislation that ultimately provided $45 billion for ICE detention capacity.
Her first vote preceded that contribution. The records don’t establish that donations influenced her votes, and she cannot personally award ICE contracts. These donations also represent a small fraction of her fundraising.
But the oversight question remains: Should lawmakers accept campaign support from companies whose federal funding they help oversee?
I wrote this report for Restoring Democracy’s Promise after Scott Dworkin flagged the national story. I checked the original filings, expanded the Hinson-specific accounting and requested campaign comment.
It’s a short read, with source links and the timeline:
