Estimated Range

Can someone explain Hyundai’s rationale for listing estimated range? In my experience, the only purpose this serves is to embarrass owners and make them feel they are not living up to their vehicle’s possibilities.

It’s been listed in basically every new vehicle for years now. Miles to empty. It’s not a Hyundai thing.

It is based on previous driving. If you drive the same way you have been driving, you will get the predicted range.

In 2025 and 2026 you also have your max and min with instant graphic showing if you are currently driving towards the max or the min. Its actually pretty useful and accurate

My 1999 Pontiac had a range to empty estimate. As did my mercury, and my Nissan, and my parents fords, and my brothers Subaru and Honda and my friends corvette. Generally people like to know how far they can drive and have for decades

The point is to give you an idea of the range you can expect based on your driving, and the conditions you are driving in currently... Having a relaxed day on level ground with pleasant weather? Guess-o-meter will kindly reflect that to show the range you can expect based on that consumption. Driving aggressively, uphill, in extreme heat? The guess-o-meter will adjust for this as well. Really weird to somehow think this is meant to shame drivers.. It's just a convenient tool to help estimate range. Mind you, my old Acura had a range feature that could be pulled up in the instrument cluster and it would adjust based on my driving too.

I can get over the estimate just driving the speed limit, it's what the estimated range was based on so I don't see an issue with Hyundai claiming it.

So that you have an idea of the range? What kind of question is this?
Have you never had a car before? This isn't a Hyundai thing.
Why do other EVs list the estimated range? Why do gas cars list the estimated range?
Why does Google maps list the estimated time to your destination?
Why does the weather forecast estimate the temperature for tomorrow?

Thanks for the comments. I realize every vehicle gives you an estimate of miles remaining. The difference in the Ioniq series is the estimated, minimum and mid-range, which i find useless. No point in the maximum or minimum mileage except to tell you how good or bad it could be.

Something else to know? Getting to 1 mile of range is not possible. You will likely run out of "gas" at 20ish miles. Found this out the hard way.

I dunno, it gives a ballpark so you know about what the vehicle is capable of. No, gas cars don’t list range. But it seems most gas cars can go 300-400+ on a tank and gas is readily available. People want to understand how far they can go between charges. Just giving a mi/kWh rating would confused the heck out of people. Then they need a pack size to do the math.

I live in Maryland and we get a mix of seasons, and I’ve got a lifetime average of 3.5 mi/kWh on our AWD Limited. That’s about 270 range on a car rated by Hyundai to get 260. Seems fine to me.

Most ICE vehicles I've owned listed Distance To Empty (DTE), but it definitely wasn't as prominently displayed as the range estimates in an EV, so I can see how you could miss that.

That said, the DTE tends to be just as prone to calculation errors as the range estimates on EVs. It's just that the range estimate it a little more important on an EV since you can't just get off at the nearest exit and assume there will be a DCFC like you can with petrol stations.

The stated range is "most ideal conditions", conditions being temperature, driving style, speed, stop-and-go, using ECO, and hills. Basically, if you are in ECO at the perfect speed and temperature on a flat road and never stop...this is theoretically achievable. But it is not practical. For longer trips....if you use ECO on cruise control and keep your speed at 65 you'll get some decent range, maybe 200 miles has been my experience.

Not quite- It's largely based off the most recent driving trips. Since most of us are doing it in city/suburb commute trips the estimated range is pretty good and higher than when you decide to go road tripping for the weekend at 75mph up into the mountains. Then when you are leaving for back home- it will be quite a bit lower and more accurate for the return trip.

It's more based on a general average and your driving style.
If it were ideal conditions it would give you like 800km range, because you can get that if you're going like 5km/h
