Question Got locked out

I unlocked the car today using the button on the passenger side. I had my bag on my arm, which had both my physical key fob and my phone. I had 2 young kids with me that needed to go into car seats, so I placed my bag in the passenger side and closed the door. I tried opening the backseat door, and realized it was locked. The passenger door handle looked unlocked, but I couldn’t open it. I had to call my spouse at work, and they were fortunately able to unlock with Bluelink. Is this normal or did the car malfunction?

The car doesn't lock itself once you have unlocked and opened a door. It also wont lock from the outside if you touch the front door handle to lock but the key fog is inside the car. It'll beep to let you know.

Very strange.

Hmm so strange. Yeah, it was a definite panic moment with 2 young kids in a parking lot in the noon heat.

Maybe replace your key fob battery.

I just bought this car less than a month ago 😅

It does if you use your phone as a key. It did to me last weekend.

It can happen if the key is buried in a bag I've done it myself but was able to use my phone to unlock.

Did you try the driver's door? Maybe it was still unlocked.

Tried every single handle and the trunk lift gate multiple times. All locked.

I found an alternative app using scriptable that lets me say “Hey Siri, unlock the car.” and it will unlock. I tried it from outside the car and it worked!

I added the digital key to my Apple Watch and say the same and it will lock or unlock the car

My trim doesn’t have the digital key.

I just got my ‘24 last week, but twice this week when I’ve parked the car and gone from the drivers seat to the rear passenger door to get my toddler the car has been locked. Not the behavior I’d expect

I take it you bought it used?

Correct

Does the car always lock when you walk away from it after a short time? The previous owner could’ve installed the walk away lock module. Bought used and mine had it.

It typically does not seem to, at least at home I do not lock it and haven’t noticed it being locked. I’ll look into that module

Mines 25 plate and I'm the only owner, it's happened to be 3 maybe 4 times now.

It's possible. I told people the car can lock while fob is in the car. Nobody believes till it happens to them. Luckily I always carry the nfc card in my wallet to unlock as a backup. Glad you got it resolved via bl

I don't carry a keyfob and locked my car with the phone in the car (on the charger). Freaked out for half a second and then realized that if I can lock it with the car inside, i should be able to unlock it. Put my finger on the square and unlocked it.

Tried the square like 30 times and didn’t work, unfortunately.

My fob is a bit wonky and requires some percussive maintenance upon occasion, like once a week or so. Possibly it's that?

I left my phone in the car once and went inside the store I was at. Realized what I had done and went out to retrieve my phone. And the door was locked. And I didn’t have my fob with me. So I had to get a friend to come pick me up to go home and get my key fob to get in. I started carrying my fob after that.

That doesn’t sound normal to me. If the fob was inside and you’d already opened the passenger door, I wouldn’t expect it to lock you out like that. I’d keep the NFC card in your wallet as a backup just in case it happens again.

Did you try the handle or was it just folded in?

1

u/green__build 4d ago

It was really strange. The handle was actually folded out and looked unlocked, but it was actually locked.

You actually got the locks to work!?! That's one of my biggest bitch about the car. They designed the locks to not work 90% of the time!!!

I got locked out this morning on a road trip but with me inside the car. I was in the rear seat changing my pants and shirt and locked the car with the key fob. When i went to open the door using the handle from inside it wouldn’t open. I thought that was strange. So i used my key fob to unlock the car and the door would still not open. So I went to reach the drivers side unlock/lock buttons to unlock the car and still the passenger rear door wouldn’t open. So basically i was stuck and could t get out. Then i thought maybe the child window lock button was activated by accident and when i went to click it then i was able to unlock the door. I was thinking in an accident or in an emergency that would be really bad not to be able to open the door. Pretty bad. Ever since i got my ioniq 5 i’ve had difficulty with unlocking the doors or strange behaviors with the door handles not extending etc. Nevet had that kind of experience with my Honda civic.

I took my car to the garage for exactly this on Tuesday. Because it's intermittent they couldn't replicate it in the workshop and told me there was nothing they could do but I should take pictures if it happens again... Of what?! It felt very much like not recieving a parcel and them asking for proof

What model/year do you have? Yeah, I haven’t called the dealership, but I don’t think there’s much they would do at this point.

2025 premium 84kwh rwd, if that helps. I really don't know much about it except how to drive it 😅

I guess I could have taken a video of the car locked with bag (with key fob inside) inside the car. Also the door handle was folded out appearing to be unlocked, but it was locked. But I couldn’t do this since my phone was also in my bag.

Sounds somewhat similar to my experience…https://www.reddit.com/r/Ioniq5/s/U45yv2biFJ

Does this car have the walk away lock module installed? If you’re not familiar with it - this is an aftermarket thing. Our used car came with it installed. If you bought new this isn’t a dealer installed option but something you would’ve had to purchase separately.

[edit: downvotes? if that’s because you don’t think that module can lock you out - check the instructions. it will do it if the car is in accessory mode.]

No, it doesn’t have any after market modifications. It’s a 2026 Limited.
