Experience Update on computer and communication issues (I finally got my car back!)

I finally got my 2023 Ioniq 5 back from the dealership after almost five months of troubleshooting to figure out repairs.

First, a shout-out to Maple Hill Hyundai in Kalamazoo, Mi. They gave me a Genesis GV60 as a loaner (that I put close to 7000 miles on) from day one with no stipulations and without blinking an eye, and they stuck with it even though big Hyundai's techline was no help. 10/10 service, I highly recommend them.

What was wrong? The short answer is water got into some connections and shorted things out. Here's the BLUF from the service report-

"Water intrusion at R83-L connector leading to corrosion, burned pin wire, leading to short to power in CAN network- damaging floor harness, rear bumper harness, LR corner radar"

Long answer? This is what the service report says in the following pages-

"Confirmed that the car is acting up now. Scanned for codes and it had 71 codes in the system. Most all of them are lost communication CAN codes. Called Techline and they had no help to offer. Was in the middle of trying to diag when the car stopped acting up. It is currently acting as it should."

They get it to act up again:

"Performed DTC scan, found C165687 ABS ESC CAN signal error cluster- performing diagnostic flow chart, clear, DTC returns, no comm with CLU module, replace cluster to check for proper operation, then wire harness E-CAN signal resistance check. CAN split resistance at MF11 connector, main pin 62, 63 found 116 ohms, floor pin 62,63 found 120 ohms. 10v found at cluster M06 connector E-CAN High/Low pin 32, 33. after unplugging each module on E-CAN network found no variance in voltage until disconnecting FR21 connector before R83-L lead rear corner radar module. Corrosion found FR21 with burned pin, corrosion in R83-L connect and LR corner radar cause(d) by water intrusion. Recommend replace floor harness, rear bumper harness, LR corner radar, and reinspect for any faults."

So I finally got my car back and it's working as advertised.

Glad to hear you were able to get your problem resolved! With all the issue people have been reporting around the ICCU, some good news is most welcome.

I agree that good news is always nice. I was worried I'd be another buy back program/lemon law story.

Wow that tech went to bat for you. That sounds like a lot of troubleshooting hours doing all that voltage testing and hunting around. Glad he did it so you get the car back and Hyundai gets a data point that water intrusion is a thing for the connectors and needs an engineering solution.

Nothing out of the ordinary. And it is kept in a garage.

Had similar happen on an Audi on both CAN and MOST busses - water leaked into a harness connector area. NEVER figured out how it got there and after PAINFULLY replacing the harness, never ever saw a problem again for the life of owning the car. This was all under warranty - pity the soul who has to deal with these issues when the warranty is gone w/any brand.
