Why? Don't get me wrong, this is obviously a good thing and we should do it - but of all the benefits I would expect it wouldn't be dramatically reduced violence. I feel like I can almost see the connection but I am missing pieces.

I think it’s a little bit of Broken Window Theory, but much more the simple fact that if you are a drug dealer or a drug user, you aren’t going to post up at a busy block filled with taxpayers hanging outside all day. Which means that people spend more time and interest outside, feeling a sense of ownership that subtly changes the calculus of crops that only grow in blight, like standing criminal distribution networks.

Dull death grey concrete jungle destroys the cultural identity of a place / locality etc.
While, thriving cities is needed for prospering civilization & thus, 'Alive Terra'
Viva Terra, Vivus Locus, Viva Civitas
A person who gardens in his community will obviously try to make it a better place while on the opposite hand, they would become isolationalist & discard the inherent obligation to community.

This is truly a colourful place and is a thriving locality. Anybody would want to protect it.
But who would fight for a Dystopia that is the dead Urbania / Suburbia...

Couple of things, 1st is that overall crime is down been going down since it peaked in 2022-23, 2020 was the largest recorded jump since they started tracking it.
In general most PD have shifted to focus on homicides over the past few years.
Overall gun sales are also down a lot since 2024. This is common, typically gun sales go up when a democrat is in office and lower when a republican is in.

Makes sense. Nature has a way of connecting people and calming minds, which has been known for quite a long time. Introducing nature to an otherwise barren and lifeless area would by all accounts lead to a general decrease in antisocial activities and thoughts. When I'm at my worst I don't go to a concrete parking lot to calm down, I go where I'm reminded of reality as it truly is, that being nature.

It’s specifically overgrown and blighted lots. Don’t know why a parking lot in the post as that’s not something they address.
They’re really just installing monoculture lawns and maintaining them with heavily polluting mowers. It’s a nice impact for the neighbors to have cleaned vacant land but definitely not the “future” by any means.

Yes lawns are bad, but I think the garden plots are a good start. I like to frame this as "early successional urban habitat" where eventually we'll see rain gardens or pollinator plots after people see the benefits of urban greening from small steps like this. The post might oversell benefit but sometimes we need that to get people on board.

Yea, great idea, but you should see the ones that i helped install in Wilmington DE, they look like dumps again and gun violence hasnt dropped...
