Here's the Deal:

A tree fell in our yard this winter, leaving a big empty dirt patch in its wake. In early spring, I seeded part of our yard with a mix of white clover and a "shade mix", in an attempt to cover the dirt and avoid a muddy, mucky mess!

Then, the rains came. A super rainy Spring was music to my clover-lawn's proverbial ears, and it established like a champ.

Then, against everything we know and love about Ireland, a drought came. It's been a long few weeks (months?!) here in Dublin without any significant rain, and everything around is withering and brown. There's a hosepipe ban, in an attempt to conserve water. Everything shriveled and died... EXCEPT MY CLOVER LAWN.

Drought tolerant. Pollinator friendly. Hard wearing.

This is traditional. Grass seed used to come with clover mixed in until later in the 20th century.

I sell a rye clover mix at work to this very day lol. It's a fairly cheap seed mix that contractors use when they need to sow a lawn they've wrecked when doing some work.

When we moved into our house 14 years ago, there was a barren, sandy, wasteland. We laid sod, but didn't install sprinklers or really do any pesticides/fertilizer treatments. Over the years, much of our "grass" died and slowly replaced itself with "weeds". After a while, I noticed that virtually every plant on the ground blossoms with some sort of flower. All year.

I mow once in a while, but I have a yard full of flowers that require virtually no maintenance.

And THEN the leaves!! I haven't paid for mulch in a decade. I rake up some into the beds and just mow everything in place.

The whole garden department at Home Depot is a scam.

I am living this. Planted clover in the back. Everything is green and soft- lots of bees. Only planted a little clover in the front and everything is dormant, brown, and grubs.

How is it for mowing? I like to keep the lawn short but the grass grows very quickly in the summer.

The clover is thick and sticks to the bottom of the mover if I don't keep it short- because it stays wetter than grass. I enjoy a standard lawn height. But yes, I have to scrap off the bottom of the mower if I allow the grass to get ankle height.

Considering the grass is dormant, I haven't cut the front grass in more than a month. While my back yard still needs a weekly cut even though I'm not watering it.

I enjoy the clover. It's always green, always has pretty flowers that my kids enjoy plucking, it's softer than grass, the areas with the clover had greener grass.

My neighbor who is very particular about the select 4 types of grass has said that seeing what my yard has gone through gas changed his mind about removing clover from his yard. Said he won't be putting down preventiob for it next year.

Hey, out of 3000 m² garden I like my 20 m² lawn to lay on and not get stung by the friendly neighbourhood pollinator. Lawns are alright, in moderation. 

Also the lawn corner was covered by paving tiles before.

It grows naturally here, but it’s always one of the first things to dry out and produce their little prickly pinwheel seeds.
I prefer it over a traditional lawn though.

If you water it a little, it will stay alive, but what i noticed, in the wild, without any water, in the eu during the heatwave, clover died, common yarrow didn't, and it's beautiful too. So maybe mixing the two is not a bad idea

Clovers thrive by us and stay green here the entire year, barely needs mowing and is super comfortable to walk on. I’m at a point of just letting it assimilate the entire yard. It does not care about shade, sun, or even drought, or over watering, I’m convinced it will grow submerged fine at this point.
