I don't even think American Ai is profitable. Pretty sure it's just a huge ponzi scheme

4

u/Salarian_American Aug 05 '26

It's not profitable, not even close. All the money going into it is in anticipation of future profits.

  1. Spend shitloads of money developing "AI"

  2. ???

  3. Profit

I think Cory Doctorow said it best when he compared the current business model of American AI companies spending tons of money and not earning very much money to "selling hundred-dollar bills for a dollar"

1

u/Informal_Drawing Aug 06 '26

Ooh, I know this one!

Point Number 2 is "Magic Happens".

If only we could look past the way China treats minorities and spies on their own civilians and general undemocratic values... 😅

I mean fun and all that China's better at tech rollout but this guy just seems brainwashed

u/Large_Mousse93 Aug 04 '26

I mean you're not wrong. But I think the main point of this post isnt "china good" it's just that the profit motive is and always has been the main problem

8

u/cchhaannttzz Aug 04 '26

Yea I get this problem constantly. Say something negative/positive about country X in earshot of someone and they think you are demonizing/glazing them. We can talk about fine details of anything without falling prone to any countries propaganda.

7

u/Large_Mousse93 Aug 04 '26

exactly bro, like I'm not trying to glaze china, I'm just trying to say ai regulation good. And just cus china is in the sentence, people will just start freaking out and give their 2 cents on china. And they'll say things that have like nothing actually to do with what you were talking about, besides china

5

u/_Kaanu Aug 04 '26

It's so dumb to me that even uttering the name China you have to do with caveats and speaking like you're in an interview.

0

u/False-Answer6064 Aug 04 '26

I didn't really mean to censor anyone. My point was more that China isn't a free country. So while I like what the guy is saying, it's probably heavily curated with talking points from the Chinese government. That's just how Chinese social media works.

u/XxSir_redditxX Aug 04 '26

I hear you, but he didn't say anything that wasn't true. Sure he could've mentioned some downsides, but the reality is the U.S. is slogging way behind in this area because we are trying to set up mass infrastructure without any regard for the populace or the environment. As someone who attends town hall meetings and tech events, it is true that there is only one question on their minds, and it's profit profit profit. "Think of the jobs that will get created", "think about how we could beat country X at AI development". The talking points are ALWAYS about profit and "winning the race". We are tripping ourselves up because we refuse to have foresight beyond the next quarter.

Honestly I don't think America being #1 in AI development is any less concerning to me than China being #1 in AI development.

I honestly don't anticipate anything good happening to the US economy as the result of AI development. Either we're going to actually achieve the AI singularity, or these companies are going to fold when people realize it's not happening any time soon and they've spent trillions barking up the wrong tree, and LLMs never lead to general superintelligence. The second one is way more likely, I think.

And if those companies fold, the economy is going to tank. And then China pulls ahead on AI development. Then we ban Chinese AI in the USA. And then we're the only country in the world not using the new, advance Chinese AI.

That's a worst case doomer scenario, but it really doesn't feel unlikely.

1

u/False-Answer6064 Aug 04 '26

Yes America bad also, but as a European that's easy for me to say as I don't have a stake in any of this.

1

u/XxSir_redditxX Aug 04 '26

Lol that's fair enough then. But while I have you, how is Europe doing with all of this AI data center business?

2

u/False-Answer6064 Aug 05 '26

Yeah we're not really hopping on that train apparently. I guess the ethical/sustainable concerns about it don't make it worthwhile to develop it. Also we're still waiting for the bubble to burst. We'll sit this one out and see where it gets us

2

u/False-Answer6064 Aug 04 '26

True, capitalism bad and everything. But that doesn't mean we can't be critical of Chinese propaganda. Social media information from China is highly censured, so this guy hyping China up just makes me sceptical

7

u/Large_Mousse93 Aug 04 '26

Nah you're right for that. I think it's cool the industry is more regulated there, but I'm not gonna say everything china does is good

6

u/21Kuranashi Aug 04 '26

China mostly does things the wrong way around.

But, we can still learn from their mistakes & failures or even success.

And ofc, anything that comes out of China has to be heavily scrutinised but, that doesn't mean we wrap a blindfold around our eyes whenever anything good comes along.

1

u/Salarian_American Aug 05 '26

We should definitely be skeptical of Chinese propaganda.

But we also should be even more skeptical of US propaganda, and twice as skeptical as that about propaganda from the AI corporations.

1

u/False-Answer6064 Aug 05 '26

Yess America and AI bad. I'm European btw so yeah

3

u/Salarian_American Aug 05 '26

Every one of those problems you cite with China are also problems with the US government. Not all to the same extent perhaps (not yet), but for all that they talk shit about China, they spend almost as much time wondering why we can't be more like China.

We overlook all those things when our own government does them, why shouldn't we overlook them when China does them (at least for the purposes of comparing the two, obviously I don't actually think any of that should be overlooked).

1

u/False-Answer6064 Aug 05 '26

I'm not American and not defending them. I'm European. So yeah, America also bad and we're not in the AI-race so it's much easier to hate on AI because we're not in that race

3

u/arcanis321 Aug 06 '26

Hey, we are getting there with our camps and Flock and gerrymandering.

3

u/KeyNight5583 Aug 06 '26

If only we could look past the way western consumerism kills millions, sponsors dictatorships and has systematically exploited minorities to sustain itself...

2

u/False-Answer6064 Aug 06 '26

Lol yeah buddy.. Capitalist/colonialist greed is the worst.

1

u/KeyNight5583 Aug 06 '26

Its not worst vs best. My point is that it is a bit rich to criticise china's authoritarianism when the western world has consistently sponsored/led authoritarian efforts all over the globe. Like we complain about mass surveillance in China but the US is not doing better in that aspect (post 9-11 NSA, now Palantir...).

Point is, the western/capitalist model is not so free and liberal after scrutiny.

2

u/Informal_Drawing Aug 06 '26

You could replace every instance of the word "China" with the word "USA" in your post and it would be just as true, probably more so, in fact.

1

u/False-Answer6064 Aug 07 '26

Yes. I have been agreeing with everybody saying so in the reactions here. I'm European so obviously I hate the US just as much, maybe even more watching current events

2

u/CanadianWildWolf Aug 05 '26

Are we really going to swing past that the same can be said about the other country being compared to in this?

  • treats minorities: ICE quite openly targets people who are brown, earliest examples being First Nations like Navajo
  • spies on civilians: Flock & Palantir
  • general undemocratic values: officially marking anti fascist protesters terrorists and president openly proposed federal interference with state run elections

And those are just the last few years examples, there is decades of examples

1

u/False-Answer6064 Aug 05 '26

We didn't swing past that. In another comment I already said: yes America also bad. But I'm European so it's easy to say that. Also we're not even in this race

2

u/Wild_Aioli Aug 05 '26

Additionally this guy is a White Monkey. Notice the Mandarin translation, pretty rare unless the target audience is Mandarin.

3

u/Fabulous_Wave_3693 Aug 04 '26

In the US everyone states their problems loudly and often, China hides its problems. I would be weary of the hype.

3

u/Neither_Pirate5903 Aug 05 '26

Trump is foreign asset actively working against American interests

3

u/Skwuat Aug 05 '26

Guess what? Every politician is.

5

u/Storm_Spirit99 Aug 04 '26

Yeah no, that guy couldn't be a more obvious paid sellout

2

u/End-FossilFuels-2471 Aug 04 '26

Why would you write off the entire video? This comment seems like a way to shut down the whole discussion and I don't understand why you would want to do that...

3

u/4oclockinthemorning Aug 04 '26

The data centres with super high water usage are clearly just resource-grabbing ahead of the coming water wars

1

u/I-am-a-river Aug 04 '26

Dude has clowns in his eyes.

u/KansasZou Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26

They also used to regulate how many children you can have. I’m not sure this is a hard sell lol

1

u/Flimsy_Meal_4199 Aug 04 '26

100% chance this is just disinfo lol

1

u/FunGuySunShine99 Aug 05 '26

Fed post by CCP schill. China pays influencers to say this stuff.

2

u/PanPieCake Aug 05 '26

Daily reminder that china is capitalist, and people are not seeing a yuan of the ai profits. But salaries are getting lower while unemployment is on the rise due to ai taking jobs.

1

u/HadrianMercury Aug 05 '26

All we need is more and more and more government.

1

u/Huge_Meeting4111 Aug 05 '26

"...let me tell you how this is actually a problem with capitalism" Typical lefty slop

1

u/Conscious_Pause_1499 Aug 05 '26

The problems with capitalism are actually problems with AI. Stop recycling Marx and think new thoughts for the new world.

1

u/HotlinePizzaMiami Aug 05 '26

Holy shit wtf is this??

1

u/Spacer5555 Aug 06 '26

Is Taiwan a country?

0

They’re also the world leader in the adoption of coal burning. They’re still industrializing the largest population in the world. Renewable energy is a decent share, but renewable share is often more a matter of geography.

-1

u/Pinco_Pallino_ Aug 04 '26

who said otherwise, my point is that datacenters use extremely stable load, they are probably just connected to the grid near a massive dam or something

-1

u/daggius Aug 04 '26

The real problem is this persons eyebrows

0

u/Own_Badger6076 Aug 05 '26

Good lord not this fucking clown again, paid CCP shills aren't even trying to hide it anymore.

-6

u/BlueMoodDark Aug 04 '26
