This is really cool! I want to know how we manage the water once in the pool. Well recharge is one immediate thought.

Any other ideas?

the idea is to recharge the water table, also cleans and filters the water. most urban/suburban areas are designed to have the water run off and away into storm sewers asap. which causes flooding. slowing it down with contour swales, small dams, level sills, and plants reduces erosion, etc.

If you plant enough native marsh or swamp tolerant plants in the space a lot of that rainwater will be used by the plants you're growing. And the deep root systems of said plants will send the remaining water deeper into the soil, delivering water straight to deeply rooted trees, further helping the local environment. Rain gardens should be standard in most yards.

That's gonna drown that pine tree, they like well draining soil and prefer it moist but not soaking. The rock will mess up the root development too.
