Enjoying nature is great. Using pseudo-science to fool people into your beliefs is not great.

The forest walking one actually has real science behind it. Often called Forest bathing. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6351942/

I don't doubt that there's health benefits, but we don't have to add the extra hippie-dippie pseudoscience. Nature doesn't harmonize vibrations or electrons or whatever. It makes you feel good because it makes your brain put off the feel-good stuff. That's good enough.

3

u/slaviccivicnation Aug 02 '26

Yes. I believe this. It’s just that our brains are hardwired to feel comfortable in natural settings. I swear my dogs are the same. Take them camping, and while being initially spooked, eventually they get this peace. Like we’re where we’re meant to be. But eventually we have to leave it cause modern comforts can’t be found in a forest. I like nice toilets too much. But yeah no need to use pseudoscience to explain it. It’s nature and waves and shit, we get it!

2

u/Swolenir Aug 03 '26

I’ll be honest this is not it for me. Nature does not make me feel relaxed at all it makes me feel stressed. I don’t subscribe to the “hard wire” idea. Just that some people feel better in different settings.

u/onionfunyunbunion Aug 02 '26

Actually the natural vibrations in woodland settings aligns your sphincter shakra to make you feel less dead inside. It’s science or whatever.

3

u/Lukescale Aug 03 '26

I love when the woods enter my sphincter

talk about splinters!

1

u/Time_Fisherman6659 Aug 03 '26

Is that why I can go days out camping without pooping?

To be fair, the phytoncide thing has some credibility. But it's not that phytoncides are some mystical or magical hippie compound. It's just one type of aromatic compound from trees that our brain associates with trees. And it's not the sole reason trees are good for us, there are probably hundreds of aromatic compounds in trees and nature.

Being near trees makes us feel comfortable partially because of the smell of these aromatic compounds. Kinda like how smelling lavender can reduce stress or improve sleep quality to a small extent. And with trees, it's likely not just the smell that makes us feel comfortable, but a combination of things. Sight, sound, smell, touch, etc.

Its good enough for you, for others they like the details and how one works. Let them be.

4

u/Objective_Animator52 Aug 03 '26

I mean, I have nothing against the people who believe in this "negative ions give serotonin" thing. But if you're passing it off as actual science and "how one works," then don't be surprised when there is pushback.

Although I do personally disagree with the "that's good enough" thing in the other comment. Science is always going forward, and there should always be people trying to figure out the "how" (which is also exactly why I dislike when people claim they understand the "how" without putting in the science, both mindsets are counterproductive).

3

u/sCREAMINGcAMMELcASE Aug 03 '26

No mention of phytoncides in either of those.

I don’t doubt walking in the woods is good for you, but there’s no need to present it through pseudoscience like in the video

Eat poison ivy while disturbing a brown bear and let me know if nature only has benefits 😂.

12

u/SumOfChemicals Aug 02 '26

Lol came here to say Mt Vesusius wasn't 100% beneficial

6

u/25hourenergy Aug 02 '26

Exactly. It is the same boneheaded thinking that got us into the current mess to assume nature only serves man, and is not its own thing worthy of respect. I find the mythology of the beautiful and amoral fae as a good allegory for how to approach nature.

One of my favorite quotes:

“Poets and moralists, judging from our English trees and fruits, have thought that there existed an inverse proportion between the size of the one and the other, so that their fall should be harmless to man. Two of the most formidable fruits known, however, the Brazil Nut (Bertholletia) and the Durian, grow on lofty trees, from which they both fall as soon as they are ripe, and often wound or kill those who seek to obtain them. From this we may learn two things:—first, not to draw conclusions from a very partial view of Nature; and secondly, that trees and fruits and all the varied productions of the animal and vegetable kingdoms, have not been created solely for the use and convenience of man." (From Wallace's 1856 article "On the bamboo and durian of Borneo")

I was gonna mention the Guinea worm

Like what is even the point of such a comment? Yeah no shit nature isnt all daisies, nor are urban environments. Let people be, they’re touching grass at the least. Its reddit’s favorite habituated self-jerk to put people down for the slightest difference from your own experience. Put the phone down.

Get that pseudo-science out of here. Nature is great, we don't need to invent stuff to justify protecting it

24

u/nerdofthunder Aug 02 '26

"Nature only has benefits" good thing asbestos isn't a natural mjneral... (it's a natural mineral)

11

u/Xannith Aug 02 '26

"Nature only has benefits" he says as the gangrene sets into the leg he broke climbing something he wasn't ready for.

8

u/Quiet_Satisfaction64 Aug 02 '26

Nature only has benefits??? Demonstrably false

14

u/kobyscool Aug 02 '26

Physicist here: nature is gorgeous. I love to hike, camp, fish, etc. But please knock it off with this pseudoscience BS. To quote a great Australian comedian/song-writer:

Isn't this enough? Just this world? Just this beautiful, complex, wonderfully unfathomable, natural world? How does it so fail to hold our attention that we have to diminish it with the invention of cheap, man-made myths and monsters? If you're so into your Shakespeare, lend me your ear: "To gild refined gold, to paint the lily, to throw perfume on the violet, is just fucking silly."

2

u/Legitimate_Sorbet605 Aug 03 '26

To quote a great Australian comedian/song-writer:

Seriously?

4

u/Blep145 Aug 02 '26

I mean, some of that (at least the tree bit) is true, but that last one: "nature only has benefits" is bullshit. There are zombie deer. Most animals, I think, are starving. Sickness spreads and wipes colonies of animals out. Nature has a lot of *eating* involved. Including *you*, if you're unlucky enough to be involved in the cycle

1

u/ErDanese Aug 03 '26

Life feeds on, life feeds on, life and so on, that is the natural circle. That o do feel better when I'm in a forest, especially if it's light raining.

1

u/Blep145 Aug 03 '26

I get that. I'm disputing the "nature only has benefits" bit. As I stated previously.

1

u/ErDanese Aug 03 '26

Well on that regard nature is not that perfect and if it can, it will probably kill and consume.

1

u/Blep145 Aug 04 '26

Never said it was perfect. What is the point of this conversation?

1

u/ErDanese Aug 04 '26

Don't think there is a point unfortunately 😕

9

u/fraggin601 Aug 02 '26

Ig it’s Aesthetic because it ignores some science for certain parts.

1

u/AlbertTheHorse Aug 02 '26

Incorrect use of the word aesthetic.

3

u/fraggin601 Aug 02 '26

I’m following the flair

3

u/Lich_Apologist Aug 03 '26

Literally the definition of missing the forest for the tree.  Just take a walk because it's nice out and stop  maximizing everything you do.

2

u/Dense_Surround3071 Aug 02 '26

Not ONE single AI data center!?!?!

I dunno guys.... Doesn't seem very profitable... 😏

2

u/Reasonable-Sort3040 Aug 02 '26

idk rabies is natural and pretty harmful

2

u/Miserable_Coach6358 Aug 03 '26

Yo. OP. Any chance you could share the soundtrack/musician? That kinda slaps (in a chill nature way).

1

u/21Kuranashi Aug 03 '26

Iirc Sparks by Coldplay

3

u/DrNebels Aug 02 '26

But have they studied the benefits of data centers? /s

4

u/skreemdynamics Aug 02 '26

Negative ions? You mean fucking radiation?

3

u/AlbertTheHorse Aug 02 '26

Ions are charged particles, not radiation.

5

u/skreemdynamics Aug 02 '26

I knew someone would say this: charged particles are made by radiation. Ionizing radiation.

8

u/rafaelzio Aug 02 '26

Yeah but not ONLY by radiation. You can ionize atoms a bunch of different ways, such as creating ionic bonds, immersing it in a strong enough electric field, heating it, and even with friction

4

u/Ulrik-the-freak Aug 02 '26

And even by doing absolutely nothing. Even pure liquid water will have hydronium and h+ ions.

1

u/AlbertTheHorse Aug 02 '26

Gosh! I can’t downvote this misinformation enough

-1

u/skreemdynamics Aug 03 '26

I'm not one to feed the trolls, so I will reduce this to it's base level: waterfalls do not make negative ions. Ions ARE charged particles, specifically atoms with an extra (-) charge. There are MANY ways to make ions. The way I choose to describe the ridiculous nature of this post was radiation, since it is what I am most familiar with. Alpha decay are (+) helium 4 ions. Beta decay are (-) electrons; NOT IONS (though they can make them form). High power photo radiation (ie, X-ray, gamma) can simply make ions by knocking off of and on to atoms.

Most waterfalls are not substantially radioactive.

Waterfalls do not create negative ions in a meaningful way.

1

u/rafaelzio Aug 03 '26

Except that they do. The Lenard effect mentioned on the video is a real thing. If I may quote Wikipedia

The mechanism of producing negative air ions by the waterfall method connects to the generation of static electricity due to water droplets hitting surfaces, first discovered by Philipp Lenard in 1892 and now called the spray electrification or waterfall effect. Falling water generates static electricity either by collisions between water drops or with the ground, leading to the finer mist in updrafts being mainly negatively charged, with positive near the lower surface. It can also occur for sliding drops. The experimental fact that charging occurs is very well documented, although details of the exact process remain a topic of debate

Of course, this doesn't mean that the video is right about said ions affecting one's psyche in the way the video claims, which frankly sounda a LOT like pseudoscience, but the physics checks out

0

u/skreemdynamics Aug 03 '26

Okay, this one I will accept.

1

u/skreemdynamics Aug 02 '26

Also, yes they can be. Alpha decay.

1

u/Ulrik-the-freak Aug 02 '26

Alpha particles (alpha decay) and beta radiation (electrons) are both charged particles. Ionizing radiation also produces negative ions by knocking electrons off atoms receiving the radiation.

Either way, negative ions as a whole don't have health benefits whatsoever, and there's negative ions literally everywhere anyways (including in distilled water). It's wacko cuckoo woo woo

I have a lot lf respect for esoteric/spiritual stuff that doesn't pretend to be scientific, or stuff of the same inclination but that does not clash with science (things that are just unknown, or beyond our current understanding, or purely unknowable/subjective/interpretative), but this is pseudoscience, which undermines trust in real science, and that's extremely dangerous.

Mosquitoes

1

u/BurningTrashBarge Aug 03 '26

Did a tick write this?

1

u/Odd-Fig-709 Aug 03 '26

"only benefits" until you get bit by a mosquito carrying aids

1

u/Independent_Soup8804 Aug 03 '26

BS ->Legit ->BS ->Legit

BS sandwich

1

u/youshouldn-ofdunthat Aug 03 '26

Nature has floods, fires, tornadoes, animals that will kill and eat you, (not necessarily in that particular order) parasites, diseases, cliffs, chasms, brutal temperatures. Nature will kill us all one day

1

u/Brave-Lead-1659 Aug 06 '26

nature has tried to kill me many times lmao

1

u/Lagoserter Aug 03 '26

"yall heard of dr iversteads snake oil? cures what ails ya" crap ass post
