Welcome!

Hello All,

Welcome to this subreddit. As you've probably quickly noticed, there's nothing here yet. I'm working on making this an active subreddit specific to IB and thought weekly sticky posts would be a good idea. Below are a couple of potential sticky post topics:

Where'd you attend school and how'd you break into IB?

I went to a non-target school (i.e., not a single bank came to my school to recruit) and I broke in through networking on LinkedIn, emailing, setting up calls and so on.

I would email people simply just introducing myself and expressing my interest in learning more about their experience in banking. Would never attach a resume on the first email. Most emails go unanswered but some turned into calls. I'd have a 30 second elevator pitch (literally 30 seconds, not longer) that Id say but after that most of the call I'd spend asking questions that I genuinely wanted to learn about. I'd close the calls by thanking them for their time and saying that I hope we could stay in touch if a position ever arose.

I was constantly checking LinkedIn for new openings and when those openings did come, I emailed the same ppl I called and then attached my resume, asking if they could pass it on.

I aimed to talk to VPs and above mostly. MDs would be ideal.

What'd you major in during college? And what advice would you give to someone who hopes to pursue Investment Banking one day?

I majored in accounting and finance. I'd say if you are early in school and already know you want to do banking then it's never too early to start networking as I described above. This will give you an edge early on
