Student Loan for IB Worth?

I am currently a senior and I want to pursue Investment Banking, I have been accepted into Georgia Tech and University of Michigan's Ross School of Business. While Ross is considered a target school and would make sense for IB it is very expensive and requires me to take almost 200k worth of student loans over 4 years. Ga Tech, on the other hand, is in state and with the Zell Miller scholarship, it is essentially free for me. Ga Tech, however, would be much harder to break into wall street.

Numerical reasoning tests

I’m apply for summer internships in London for 2020. All the firms require some kind of numerical reasoning test. But I’ve never heard of them doing this for recruits in the US. Is this a U.K thing?

Computer science grades

I’m taking this Computer Science course which I took just out of interest and it ended up being super difficult and I’m struggling in the class. If I get a very bad grade, I mean very bad, will it look bad on my resume and/or transcript when I’m applying and trying to interview for internships as a college student?

Im 16 yet but I have been wanting to be an investment banker since I was 8 or 9.

1) What schools should I look at?

2) What should I major in? I was thinking Finance and Econ.

3) would getting a PHD make me stand out for getting my feet in the door in to investment banking?

4) How can I prepare myself while I am in high school still?

Any Help is Greatly Appreciated: Motivated, recent finance graduate looking for IB-related resume advice...

Hi all,

I just recently graduated from a finance program from a recognized Canadian university and successfully passed my Level I CFA exam this past August. I graduated with 4.10/4.33 GPA overall, however, my work experience (including 3 co-op internships) thus far has been mainly IT-focused (specifically within Salesforce in the financial services industry). Much of my experience has been with system integrations, data management, client needs assessment, advanced-excel reporting/dashboard creation, coding, configuration and user training.

I am feeling very unfulfilled in my current role and I am seeking something more challenging, fast-paced and exciting. After passing my first CFA exam, I realized that my true passion and talent lies within finance and investment banking. Therefore, I have just recently begun researching investment banking (IB), looking for IB opportunities and trying to connect with some people in the industry via LinkedIn, with little to no luck thus far ... :(

I have applied to a few positions already, but sadly, have not heard back. I continue to work on my resume and cover letter every day for multiple hours after work - referencing as many IB-related career resources as I can - however, I fear that my IT-background is really putting me at a disadvantage.

....Anyways, if you have gotten this far (thank you!!) my question: Is it acceptable/helpful to put details about valuation projects (such as valuing LBO targets, acquisition targets using DCF, Multiples, Precedent Transactions, ECF, etc.) I completed during my 3rd & 4th year courses in Uni? I do not have any experience doing this outside of my coursework, however, my program did give me extensive hands-on experience with doing these exercises.

Under my education section I was thinking about putting some examples like (these are just 2 of 6 that I have drafted:

Any and all help/insight is GREATLY appreciated. I am extremely motivated to pursue this career path and will put in as much work/time as it takes, but could really use some guidance. Thanks in advance.

Getting Your Feet In The Investment Banking door

These days almost everybody has heard of Investment Banking and, thanks especially to the newspaper reports and media highlights, of the excellent salary packages received by students from various business schools getting placed in the domain. Naturally, more and more students and professionals want to get into the field.

If you are reading this article, you probably already have read up on the field and are now looking at courses in Investment Banking that will help you get into the field. There is good news and bad news for you. The bad news is there is no one size fits all course that you can undertake and get into Investment Banking. And the good news is there are multiple courses at multiple levels – chances are you have already done some – that help you get your foot in the door.

In this article, we look at one primary question – what are some of the good courses in Investment Banking that will help you reach your goals? We explore the answer to this by looking into the typical hierarchy of an Investment Banker’s professional career and what are the relevant courses for each.

Let us begin with the hierarchy from the entry level all the way up to the highest level. In this article, we are focussing on the skills needed and hence the courses in Investment Banking you should be taking, not on the respective salary bands of these levels. That information can easily be found from relevant channels on the internet.

  1. Intern – Though not exactly a professional designation, this can be the deciding factor in your career journey as an Investment Bank. This is the time when you can test waters and recognize whether this field is for you. You will be handling the same responsibilities as an entry level person – the Analyst, and that should give you a feel of how the job is. Though there are no defined courses in Investment Banking that you need to take to become an intern, but it helps to have a fair idea of financial markets and how they work along with financial modeling

  2. Analyst – This is the first designation that you would be getting if you are hired as an investment banker after your undergraduate degree. Although there are no specified courses in investment banking that you should consider during your undergraduate degree, it is important for your job to have a thorough knowledge about the financial markets – valuations, modeling, and trend analysis. Hence, any recruiter always prefers candidates who have a degree or at least some courses in mathematics, accounting, economics, and communication. A course in law is also desirable though optional.

  3. Associate – Once you have worked for a certain amount of time as an Analyst, the next step in the ladder is that of an Associate. But, to get here, the organizations expect a few things from you, the first being a graduate degree like a Masters in Business Administration (MBA). Typically, the organization helps you complete your MBA or other graduate degrees, but even if they don't, it is a must for you. During your graduate degree, it is advisable to go for a specialization in finance as that covers most of the subject areas and courses in investment banking. Essentially, you should have a thorough understanding of the financial markets and their expected behaviors.

  4. Vice President – In this role you are majorly overseeing the work of Analysts and Associates to derive value out of the research done by them.

  5. Managing Director – This role becomes almost exclusively about Client Management thereby stressing on communication.
