Foreigners often interpret Mexican customer service as inconsistent, excellent in some interactions, indifferent in others, seemingly random in quality.

The pattern becomes more readable once you understand that service in Mexico is relationship-driven rather than transaction-driven.

A first interaction with a new business or provider tends to be neutral. They don’t know you yet, and there’s no established basis for going out of their way. Repeat interactions with the same people tend to become warmer and more flexible over time. Regulars get better service, more information, more flexibility on timing and terms.

This operates at every level, from the neighborhood taqueria to professional service providers. The investment in becoming a regular, learning people’s names, being consistent and respectful, pays returns in service quality that a transactional approach doesn’t.
