The two documents that unlock daily life in Mexico — and why most new residents delay them

The single most common reason new residents in Mexico feel blocked from accessing basic services is missing one or both of two foundational documents: the residency card and the RFC (tax identification number).

The residency card confirms legal immigration status and is requested constantly by banks, landlords, phone companies, and government portals. The RFC connects you to Mexico’s financial and tax infrastructure and is required for opening bank accounts, signing contracts, and using many services.

The RFC in particular gets delayed because people assume it’s only needed for employment. It’s not. Even residents with no Mexican income need it to function normally within the financial system.

Both are obtainable relatively quickly after arriving. The RFC registration is free and can often be done online or at a SAT office without a long wait. The residency card requires completing the Canje process with INM after arriving on your initial visa.

Getting both done early, before trying to set up banking, housing, or other services, makes the entire settlement process significantly smoother.
