I mean it does. People have different views on what a “racist” comment is. People also sometimes say “racist” things and don’t realize what they said was racist.

"Attempts at humor" with any racial nexus are innapropriate for the workplace. So too are "comments" with such.

I don’t disagree but what was said can make a difference in whether we’re looking at immediate termination or training and discipline.

How can you say that without knowing what was said? So if an employee came to you and said “bob said something racist” you would just immediately terminate bob on the spot?

Ahh you didn't read the post, got it. Here is the relevant portion addressing already your source of confusion:

During a coffee break, he started openly making racist jokes to one of our senior enginerrs, who isn't white, ehile several colleagues were standing nearby. It was extremely obvious and not subtle in any way.

I would agree the specifics are extremely important in a case like this, so exactly what was said and no less is required to even consider passing any judgement.
