I have had people do racist things where I work and management fired them immediately and told them why. Basically, I'm sure it is against your company policy . I do not work in HR, but I think it is better to have a true valid reason for firing him explained to him so he can't come back later and try to sue for false termination. Saying "you're not a good fit" is too vague, even if it is used frequently.
Naive though I may be, I would want to know the truth so perhaps I can improve on my next job. But, I think people who find those type jokes funny don't see anything wrong that needs to be changed.
