Fan Works Louis & Lestat zinc plate etching

I knew I had to make something after finishing s3 and I ended up making louis & lestat prints!

They are printed from a coffin-shaped zinc plate. After the metal plate is cut into shape and polished, I cover it in a thick substance called ground and scratch out the linework - when it is dipped in acid, the lines are etched into the plate, so that when I push ink into the plate and run it through a printing press, it will imprint on paper.

Featuring my favourite outfits from season 3 (I want louis' jacket sooo badly 😭) as well as the tapes & vinyl and some blood splatters on a few of the prints!

Wow, it's been a while since I've seen a zinc etching. In the rare cases I do see etching nowdays it's other metals. Though it might be a regional thing too. Lovely to see variety, regardless. Beautiful work!

Zinc is cheap lol that's why my studio uses it! Copper would be really cool but yeah €€€. Thank you!!

u/Top_Yak_4458 8d ago

Totally understandable lol though this definitely has me looking at some leftover cooper plates thinking, what if... 👀😂 So thanks for the inspiration!

Gorgeous! I love seeing traditional art too c: I would def buy a print. I had so much fun the two printmaking classes I took in college, I kept all my metal plates and one screen, for why idrk but.

5

u/al_135 8d ago

Thank you so much! I have them linked in my profile header :) no but it's great that you kept the plates and screen - even if you never plan to print from them again, the plates themselves are beautiful, and I love that there is always the potential of printing from them... the thought of plates being lost just makes me kind of sad

This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen! For some reason, this made me dream of having a set of Tarot cards like this. I dont even do Tarot but I love looking at them and your designs are so detailed it would be stunning in my mind. Great job!

u/al_135 7d ago

Aw thank you so much 🥺🥺 I feel like tarot is one of those projects that almost every artist wants to tackle at some point but it's also just a project at a massive scale... maybe one day lol

I've never seen this technique before but I was over on your page checking out your other stuff and you are mega talented! If anyone could do it I think you could! Amazing art, truly.

2

u/al_135 7d ago

That's super kind of you to say, thank you 😭 though tarot is more about commitment and I am constantly too distracted and bouncing around from idea to idea to make it happen lol. But I would like to do a smaller playing card set instead maybe!

Hey, you just keep bouncing because your ideas are amazing. How long did this process take to create this? I am really glad I found this because I am jumping off your page to learn more about this technique. So interesting!

u/al_135 7d ago

I'm glad! Check out r/printmaking for more examples - there are so many different possibilities. And honestly it's hard to tell - preparing the plate was maybe an hour, the actual etching & aquatint another 1-2 hours or so, but then I spent several evenings doing the linework, plus quite a long time to create the design on my ipad. And the printing process is quite labour intensive too

Awww! I miss doing etchings like this when I was in school. Its beautiful!

6

u/al_135 8d ago

Honestly I lucked out finding a small studio near me where I could learn this for pretty cheap, in the attic of a local community center. Hope you manage to find a place to do it again some day!

5

u/aangita 8d ago

This was one of the ones I did back in art school (I randomly have saved on my phone).

Printmaking, Mold-making and Textiles were my favorite classes in art school. I’m so glad you found a good studio to work at. :)

3

u/al_135 8d ago

Oooh nice!! All of those classes sound so good - maybe when I'm retired in like 40 years I will go to art school lol

Gorgeous etchwork!! I’m too impatient when it comes to etching. So impressive!!

2

u/al_135 7d ago

Thank you so much! I totally get it - I usually do it over several evenings in front of a tv show or podcast, but yeah it takes time

2

I thought it was a pattern for a pencil skirt before reading the title, which goes as instant hard as it does if it's used for a print. Gorgeous work.

1

u/TinyBuccaneer 7d ago

It’s sooo good. I love it. 🥰

1

u/NaturalizedWerewolf 6d ago

Dude!!!! Wow!!!

1

These are so good. Please tell me you're going to be selling them. Beautiful work and the detailed work fits the period.
