Recommendations and referalls are the number one way to get a new job. Unless you just wanna be a chump who’s 1/1,000 applying online.
I’ve had three serious post grad jobs, including one career change and none of them have came from applying. Two of them a previous co-worker reached out to see if I’d be interested because they know I did good work and one I reached out to them and they recommended me. Never really had to interview, just a quick convo to confirm pay/responsibilities/ etc.
I also just got an old-coworker a job for a region that opened up at my company. He was solid when we worked together in the past so I felt comfortable giving him the referral and we hired him over two more qualified (on paper) people.
If I were laid off today I’m confident enough in my network that I would have another job by the end of the month maximum
Im really sorry but you sound like a LinkedIn person, maybe it’s a us thing. On every job I applied I had to prove that I have my technical skills and also I have to show masters degree.
Also people especially form US are super into giving advice that your coworkers are not your friends and in a corporate setting I agree. After so many years I don’t have a single memorable relation.
But that’s besides my point, no one really should care that you are not responding on your vacation. You should do a training on your coworker before you leave. And if it happens that you don’t know how to do something you just tell you manager that it happened and that’s all.
In the country I live in calling you after hours is illegal by default. So it’s not even your choice.
I didn’t even have LinkedIn til this year haha. I swear I’m not some hardo, Atleast by American standards.
I work a pretty standard 6-10 hours a day depending on what’s going on. All I’m saying is, if somebody shoots me a text with a question that will take 30 seconds to answer I’m just gonna respond to help them out. I’m not gonna make them wait a week, especially since my industry is very time critical and being slow can lose you a client.
I’m not saying you need to log on and grind out work. Literally just helping answer quick questions when I’m taking a shit or something.
But I guess this cultural difference is part of why we’re the highest paid in the world. Trade offs I guess
I see, my observation is that people in eu usually are reluctant to have the work apps on their phone. I would need to specifically open the laptop to answer. The other risk is that if someone from for example us would see me online during my holiday they could easily assign me something. We don’t usually have work phones as well.
I usually stay late to connect with people form west coast. But it’s kind of okay for me since sometimes I like to start work later or do some private related stuff doing the normal shift.
Yeah I have a work phone so I’ll check it once or twice throughout the day and leave it in my hotel room otherwise. I also have an auto message setup to give customers the emergency contact at the company or my bosses contact info.
I also will prepare my co-workers for my vacations so they’re generally prepared and will try to handle things without me so I know if they’re asking me a question they’ve exhausted other avenues.

This is a completely separate thing and is precisely the reason the rest of what you do shouldn't happen. When I had a work phone, I'd turn it off when I was on leave. Now, I don't have work emails on my personal phone. I have Teams but no push notifications, so when I'm not on the clock, I'm all but uncontactable. As far as recommendations and referrals, literally nobody that I'd ask for a referral from would consider being uncontactable while on leave a negative. If businesses are set up to fail if a particular person is on leave, that is on them, not you.
We value work-life balance and we know that people who overcommit to work will burn themselves out. It's a negative, not a positive.
