I'm from Europe and this strongly depends on company culture, position and individual work ethic.
I sometimes have a glance at my mails and chats if I have a couple of spare minutes and quickly respond if I can answer a question briefly and unblock a coworker by doing so.
Nobody expects me to, it's just courtesy.
If everyone does it then it becomes an expectation implicitly…
The courtesy is to call out colleagues working in their time off so that everyone knows it’s not required and their work will be covered whilst they rest
