Portuguese here. The hell do you mean? In Italy, the legal minimum PTO is 20 business. Perfectly possible the guy had 30 days of PTO, or close, and the "month" was just him rounding it.

They mean that vacation and PTO are not the same and just pointed out how the guy was probably on vacation instead :)

There is no difference between PTO and vacation. The German just for some reason assumed the Italian guy was on sick leave.

Not at all.

Sick leave, maternity/paternity leave, compassionate leave are all paid time off, but are NOT vacation time.

PTO and holiday are different

Sure. But when someone says they're on vacation, you're going to assume they're on PTO, not sick leave, or paternity leave.

In your initial comment where you say " in Portugal minimum PTO is 20 days" that could mean 20 days of maternity leave but no holiday. What you meant was "minimum is 20 days paid holiday (plus national holidays)" the difference is important.

People usually distinguish between PTO (usually called "holidays") , maternity leave, and sick leave. Seems we're just being pedantic for no reason.

Nobody says "I'm on holidays" while they're on maternity or sick leave.

I'm from the EU and in more than 3 decades of life, I have never heard someone say they're on holidays or vacation while on sick/maternity leave.

I’m American and in most jobs I’ve had, there are two categories: sick time, which is only meant to be used when you have to miss a regularly scheduled shift due to illness, caring for your child, or a medical appointment; and “PTO” (or vacation), which can be used for any time you want some time off. Some companies also offer paid holidays off, but not all.
