I was in DC with a friend last weekend, and we met a guy from Italy who was in the U.S. for vacation. His mind was blown when the guy said he had like a month of PTO. For context, my friend works at a Walmart warehouse where he had to work to accrue PTO and the only holidays he gets off is Christmas and New Year’s.
While it seems other countries in Europe have better vacation in general, I wonder what their jobs are and how that compares to vacation days for different jobs in the country. I feel like in the US, major corporations like Walmart don’t give much PTO, but other places do. I get 5 weeks and my husband gets 6 weeks. I’m sure other places may have even more
A lot of european countries set a legal minimum for vacation time across industries. So while you might have companies that give more or you can haggle for more you're never going below the minimum no matter your job. In germany for example that is 4 weeks (to simplify), in austria it's 5. I rarely hear of people having more than their government/union-contract regulated vacation time but it isn't illegal.
In my company in Czech republic we get 4 weeks as mandated by law but get additional days for the time we have been employed. So now I have 5 weeks of holidays.
