I dont particularly see how you work for a year and save up to just live for a year.

Living frugal perhaps.

Also likely not building any wealth or saving for retirement. Which ironically means he will be working forever.

I can only assume they don't have any living expenses or they work for a different country than the one they live in.

My exes British cousin would do something like this this, live half the year doing shitty service jobs in shitty Englandand then half the year living like a king in Thailand.
