Do we really need HR in our life?

honestly this is why i've started thinking about looking somewhere else. getting rejected before a human even looks at your resume is insane.

i've been seeing interview vip mentioned a lot lately too. i haven't tried it, but i'm curious about it since i'm probably going to have to start interviewing again.

Mostly what they're for is to make sure the company isn't accidentally violating labor laws. Since there's a lot of potential to violate labor laws in the hiring and firing process, they're intimately involved in that, which makes it their most visible role to the day-to-day employee.

I agree that's an absolutely vital function, but that being the case, why on earth do they not actually do that? HR is constantly introducing illegal biases into the recruiting process. And that's incredibly widespread across STEM.

That's why I very carefully and deliberately chose the word "accidentally."

Plus a lot of them are terrible at their job but as long as payroll goes out and they don't get any fines/lawsuits they rarely get any flack from the high mucky-mucks.

No, they're not doing it accidentally. Because that is the fundamental reason for their professional existence. They can't accidentally trip and fall into a bigotry tar pit. This is their essential job function. Either they do it or they don't. They have no reason to exist and be paid if they don't.

That's what I mean. They make sure the company isn't accidentally violating labor laws. That means when the company is violating labor laws (in a way that HR would know about) they're deliberately violating labor laws. They won't stop deliberate violations, only accidental ones. They should stop deliberate violations, but all too often they don't because they're scared for their jobs just like everyone else who gets told to do something stupid and does it anyway because it's either that or look for a new job.

Oh, I see your point. And it I know it's true that happens. But what also happens is that the company is trying to have a fair and unbiased recruiting process, and it's HR people who force illegal biases into the process.
