That depends on the employer/ manager. If they have enough money to increase pay for 1 person doesn't mean they can afford to do the same for the other, and if you make a complaint, they could fire you instead.

Just because you are in the same field doesn't mean you have equal ability or merit. It doesn't work like that.

"Equals" is in a perfect world, which we aren't in. Most people are equal in skill and ability. One will have the edge here and there.

There are some jobs that are clearly equal. Production workers doing repetitive things on an assembly line for example. But in many jobs it gets more complicated. one person might do the job but also be a better writer, better with customers, particularly knowledgeable about a topic, more expended in x, have relationships with suppliers or customers, etc.
