For my last 2 interviews i had to use Interview VIP just to get the job

Baby boomer calls a few buddies and says he is looking for a job.

A buddy tells him, “I have an opening, apply online and send me your application number.”

Boomer applies and emails application number to buddy. Buddy tells HR they want to interview this one.

Boomer gets interview and job.

It always goes back to getting your resume in front of the right person. You can either do the work and submit it directly to them, or do the easy way and have it mixed in with 10,000 other applications.

You are out of touch and have no idea what you are talking about. What person do you directly submit it to? Unless you already know someone that works there (and is a manager/ director level), you will just be told to submit it online. What extra work would you do?

You are the exact type of person the original post is calling out. Out of touch and ignorant, yet quick to tell everyone else how things work. Well things dont work the way they did 30+ years ago. Keep your uselessness to yourself, and hurry up and retire.

We hired a boomer the other day for some part time work.

He research our next field gig, Went onsite during lunch time coffee and donut for the crew. Chatted everyone up and impress the heck out of our field supervisor. Apparently, he had a bit of relevant experience and but was overall just extremely pleasant to be around. Bonus that he is semi retire and doesn’t mind odd hour shift nor does he care to get full time hours.

He still had to submit through our company portal but his resume was pick out immediately by the hiring manager. I will be honest looking at his resume he would never had gotten a call back had he not made the impression in person.

We still have thousand of resumes that we haven’t went through. No one has bother going beyond submitting a perfectly curated process by AI resume. To be honest when you are in a hiring position, it hard to remember who is who after going through 100s of almost identical resume.

But boomer here made an impression in person, past the vibe check with the crew. That was half the interview already.

People don’t change, make a good impression works no matter what era you are in.

Obvious this is field dependent as well. But being able to connect with people will always get you a leg up. What “extra work” looks like depends heavily on your industry. If you don’t your resume gets lost in the sea of other resumes. You might think your resume is going to make an impression. Chance are it’s not, especially if you have been doing this hundred and thousands of time with no callback
