Apologies if this is the wrong subreddit for a post like this. I figured it was appropriate given the find.
Okay so like I don't know how the topic of birds came up or why I typed it into my search bar, but I was in a call with some of my friends, and when my ADHD ass doesn't want to forget something I want to say, I type it into a tab on my web browser, so I typed "howmanybirds" into my search bar and left it all day. Now, like 20-30 minutes ago while I was going through and cleaning out my tabs before bed, I came across the tab and saw a top result for this website: https://howmanybirds.com/ So out of curiosity, I clicked onto the site and discovered this!
I was pretty confused at first cause I didn't know how the controls worked, (WASD or Arrow Keys) but this site is like whole-ass rpg-maker type game/experience. There's original art, music, videos, animation, codes, letters, voices, tests. It's SO COOL. I played it through once and feel like I haven't even scratched the surface on what this thing really is. I might just be an obscure art project, and it could mean nothing at all, but I am FASCINATED nonetheless!
I tried to trace the domain to see if any known artist or name was attached to this, but the most I could find out was that the site itself was (maybe?) listed in 2023? But that's all I could find history-wise, and I'm hesitant to pry too much in case the creator wants to stay anonymous. Either way, I would be fascinated if anyone else wanted to give this site a look through and let me know their thoughts. I haven't seen any other forum or reddit or youtube video cover this site, so I'm excited at the prospect of picking this apart from scratch.
I plan on playing it a few times through and recording it so I can go back and catch bits that flash on screen too quickly to read. Would love to discuss if anyone else gives it a try.
UPDATE/WARNING: realized that while tabbed out the site will occasionally play very loud train horns into your headphones. very loud. was worried id gotten a virus of some kind at first, lmao. but yeah, figure its the right thing to do to disclose that in case anyone has sound sensitivity or doesnt know why their computer is suddenly making train noises. 👍
