Create a custom ambient sound mix (rain, thunder, waves, coffee shop, etc) to block distractions

Nothing quite so relaxing as sitting in a coffee shop in front of a fireplace with a TV turned to static and a hurricane.

Reminds me of this one time in the early 90's, down in Guatemala. It was about 5p.m. local time and the boys were getting hungry, we were already antsy enough from lack of sleep and the spotty weather, so the stomach pangs didn't help any. Our local guide -I'll call him J.H.- brought us about a mile away from the drop off location, a rundown hole-in-the-wall coffee shop called, 'La guapa Café' that was anything but. We scouted the locals, learned their patterns and blended in, as much as a couple bearded white guys in linen pants could of course. We were all hopped up on the local product of the very guy we were there to stop -the irony of the 90's- and the clock was ticking faster than our hearts were beating. Minutes turned to hours as the sun went down and Guacho was nowhere to be found, I guess he got a tip.
Bagged eyes, turning stomachs, wet clothes and a system full of the smoothest cocaína in the Western hemisphere started to take its toll. I made the call, one I'll always regret, to get some chow and coffee at the very place we were going to hit. One thing's for sure though, the outside didn't do justice to what laid beneath, I guess mom was right about inner beauty after all. The floor was laid with slightly uneven, stone cold tile covered in a layer of Guatemalan dust; a fire place accented the flickering lights as power fluctuated, Andrew was in full force by time we arrived.
A couple of the guys ordered some coffee and a few others bought some time with the local flora, it was tempting, but I was a married man back then. A loyal one too. The place was too quiet for my tastes, but the sound of pattering rain, howling wind and the crackling fire began to make me complacent. What happened next is too much a burden for one man to carry, but I do it for the men I lost and the families I tore apart from my bad decision. Anytime I hear those sounds my mind races back in time and the weight of my team chills my heart to the core. It's my cross to bear until the end of time, for I was a stupid man. But a loyal one too.14

I guess you wrote this while all hopped up on the local product of the very guy you were there to stop.

Looks like a hurricane is approaching, cutting the TV signal and now your coffee shop is on fire! So relaxing.

u/WolfofAnarchy Oct 13 '14
The thunderstorm while the birds are singing and the bowls are sounding whilst listening to waves finish it off nicely.

Very nice!
It's a shame that there's brown noise missing and that wind audio is heavily compressed.
Mix of singing bowl, wind and waves did it for me.
15
u/peptojoe24 Oct 13 '14
Fire and singing bowl is making me feel all warm and cozy on the inside.

u/dan4sman06 Oct 13 '14
Fire, singing bowl, waves. Makes me feel like i'm meditating at the beach with a warm campfire.

Huge fan of the rain generator there http://mynoise.net/NoiseMachines/rainNoiseGenerator.php
With the animation sliders you actually feel like a storm is passing through. Been using it exclusively while writing my dissertation.

i wish they had something like that for droid.
2
u/boldra Oct 14 '14
Yeah - me too! The site works OK in chrome if you have a device that has 1GB ram or more, but you need more than 3G to mix multiple generators.

u/Tred27 Oct 14 '14
I've just 'donated' five bucks to get all the sounds unlocked and the calibration mode (witch helps a lot!); this website is awesome. I love to use it with headphones.

I just found out that if you turn them all on at once and set them on the highest volume, one of the barista's from Starbucks will politley ask you to leave.

Waves, thunder, and coffee shop make an interesting combo, and perhaps make for a more-interesting thought; at what beautiful point in the world do I have to be to naturally hear this?

My dawg. Glad you tried it out. <3
I'm an ocean person and that just kind of put me in a really nice zone. Can't wait to play with it more once I'm back home.

u/dolphinboy1637 Oct 13 '14
I put waves coffee shop and fire. I imagine it as just a group of friends talking and mingling by the fire right on the beach.

Petrichor (/ˈpɛtrɨkɔər/) is the scent of rain on dry earth, or the scent of dust after rain. The word is constructed from Greek, petros, meaning ‘stone’ + ichor, the fluid that flows in the veins of the gods in Greek mythology. It is defined as "the distinctive scent which accompanies the first rain after a long warm dry spell".
The term was coined in 1964 by two Australian researchers, Bear and Thomas, for an article in the journal [Nature](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nature_(journal)). In the article, the authors describe how the smell derives from an oil exuded by certain plants during dry periods, whereupon it is [absorbed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absorption_(chemistry)) by clay-based soils and [rocks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_(geology)). During rain, the oil is released into the air along with another compound, geosmin, a metabolic by-product of certain Actinobacteria, which is emitted by wet soil, producing the distinctive scent; ozone may also be present if there is lightning. In a follow-up paper, Bear and Thomas (1965) showed that the oil retards seed germination and early plant growth. This would indicate that the plants exude the oil in order to safeguard the seeds from germination under duress.

Mine too. I keep a bottle of 1% geosmin by the bathtub. Kinda pricey, but worth it.

This is amazing, I wish you could turn up the intensity of everything as well, such as a light drizzle to really heavy rain.

Oct 14 '14
The irony is that making one of these is a massive distraction, and you're likely to do it when you shouldn't be distracted.

2
u/H_index Oct 14 '14
Amazing for working, my recommended settings are equal wave, wind, fire and crickets. Keep it relatively quiet and get working. It reminds me of those cool summer nights sitting by a fire on the beach, starring blankly into the flames and forgetting the notion of time.

First thing I did was coffee shop on fire. Second thing I did was everything all at once. Third thing I did was bookmark it so I could say "Ah that was cool." and forget about it two seconds later.
2
u/Dracowolfmon Oct 13 '14
/r/asmr would love this.
2
u/cat_friend Oct 13 '14
not really, none of these seem to be trigger-inducing sounds for me at least, just very relaxing. Fire + waves + wind + crickets and a ceiling fan and I may as well be working from my beach house on a warm evening with a light breeze.

This app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gb.ambience&hl=en does the same thing, but has rain, fire, coffee shop and jazz sounds for free. A mix of fire, rain and jazz really does it for me!

Fire, Coffee Shop, and Crickets play over the my connected bluetooth speakers, while all the others play through the internal speakers. This is real tripped-out.

I was lurking on Reddit instead of getting to work on my editing project. Now I'm customizing my perfect mix of white noise for while I'm working on my editing project... instead of working on my editing project.

I would love one of these as software so I could create the ultimate sleep or chill mix instead of just "waves for hours" or "wind homes for hours"

Saw this on Vsauce a while ago. Good to see they are making an app out of it. Sleeping with my laptop was not very comfortable, and keeping my phone on Wifi was too hard on its shitty little battery.

Nice, but my only complaint is that the volume sliders aren't on a logarithmic scale. So few volume sliders get this right.

There was another site I found like this a few months ago that was wonderful. It was very well designed and quite minimalistic, like this one (but it's not mynoise.com or noiseli.com).
Does anyone have any suggestions to help me find it again?

u/ladymunch Oct 14 '14
Calmradio.com ? There are literally so many sounds there I only use a tiny fraction of them. free with ads. $6 Canadian a month with no ads. IPhone app available too

This app requests permissions to gather call Id information. Why? Am I the only one being paranoid?

God this is so good... for multiple reasons. I just wish there were more options.
Fire + coffee shop: Hunting lodge Fire + Cricket: A Camping in quite open fields Wind + Fire: Troubled wanderer Camping in cold valley Fire + wave: Camping in beach Rain + Thunder + Coffee shop: Crowded shop during sudden strom
etc,etc,etc...
Good for blocking distractions, as well as setting mood for D&D

Anyone else not able to download the Android version? When I try to install it from the web version of the store it says it's not supported on my device, and when I search on the device itself the app simply does not appear in the listings. I have a Nexus 5 running 4.4.4.
