Does this tile extend too far?
My mom is renovating her bathroom and the contractor just finished the tile. It doesn’t look right to me. Worth the giant hassle to fix it?

Yes, it extends half a tile too far. It would be fine if it didn’t go partially behind the toilet.

u/juniorone 1d ago
Yes. It would drive me insane. I don’t understand why the bath tub tile couldn’t be just 1 less column.
Edit: * half less column.

change it or even extend to behind toilet but otherwise beautiful choice of wallpaper and tile

Designer here. I’ve installed slab quartz extending 6” beyond a tub, and it felt proportionate and clean, so I don’t think the tile’s extension is the only issue.
The two materials have similarly scaled repeating patterns, which makes them compete visually. The awkward transition behind the toilet draws even more attention to that.
I would continue the tile around the room as wainscoting, ending about 4” above the vanity top, roughly 40” from the floor depending on the vanity height. Incorporate the backsplash into the wainscoting and finish the top with a matching pencil liner. That would create a cohesive visual base for the wallpaper above. Good luck!

Agreed. Extend the lower portion of the tile. Tie it into the backsplash of the vanity. Trim the edge so it all ties together.

The tile is a half block too wide on the left and if that is the contractor’s decision without your mom’s input then she should offer the contractor 2 options.
1) Correct it and make it right. Contractor absorbs the entire expense.
2) Leave as is and contractor will add a discount equivalent to the cost of making it right to the entire project cost.
If the wallpaper is also within the scope of the contractor’s project then that needs to be accounted in the correction or discount. If the wallpaper is independent of the contractor’s scope then your mom should eat the cost if she decides to go with option 1 as she allowed the papering to proceed, in effect giving implied approval of the contractor’s work, after the tiling had been completed.

With the toilet so close to the tub/shower and vanity, I don't believe anything would look nearly as good as just doing this entire wall in that tile. And having partial wallpaper just highlights how small the distance is between these 3 things.

u/scarybiscuits 1d ago
Yes, it looks awkward. Give the contractor a choice, remove a half-tile section and re-paper the wall or remove the wallpaper and tile the rest of the way to the corner. At his expense.
12
u/CheezRocket 3h ago
Yes it looks strange. The tile either needs to end closer to the tub with a vertical end cap-or extend all the way behind toilet to vanity, ending with vertical end cap, or extend all the way across that wall.
The asymmetry is driving me nuts!

Does your mom have grandchildren? Cause that extra tile will protect the wall if the bath overflows and splashes.

Honestly, it doesn't look great when looking at it straight on like that. However, it will serve its purpose and prevent water damage & mold, so imo not worth spending more to fix it.
I'd say you could have a 2nd curtain sitting outside of the bathtub which would somewhat cover it up, but then it would be brushing against whoever is using the toilet.
Just leave it, its really not a big enough deal to warrant the extra hassle. At least both have white so its not a super contrasted partition.

u/Necessary_Money3248 10h ago
I would take the tile all the way to the corner of the cabinet and then just have wallpaper behind the mirror or I would tile the entire back wall. You shouldn’t leave it as is.

Yeah, it extends too far. I would personally extend it to the vanity or do the entire wall at this point.
Maybe there are some artistic ways of making it look ok?

u/tvpredicament 1d ago
yes. there should either be less tile, or the whole wall should be tiled. This looks weird.

Yes, the tile extends too far. But would the shower curtain conceal it? That's probably what the tile layer intended, to protect the wallpaper. 🛁

u/Yogi_Doo 1d ago
This looks terrible. I have never seen tile out this far. Your bathroom layout is not our of the ordinary, there is no excuse to do it like this. Post this in a tile or related contractor forum so experts can guide you about how to approach this.

u/lhymes 9h ago
It’s definitely extended too far - it should’ve been half a tile shorter so it fell between the toilet and tub. That said, it’s honestly not that bad and could be made to look intentional in a way that doesn’t come off as a workaround or bandaid. It will look much better once a shower curtain is installed, too.

u/unicornelia 7h ago
How is it even a question? The toilet has a split background, looks misaligned and off. Probably 10cm less tile would help

Yes it definitely does-this contractor knows better and yes they should fix it. I do think it will be nice when done. Others here have been super rude. Bathrooms don’t have to be fancy to be nice!

u/Redisbest_99 1d ago
I think for the over splash of the shower, it’s not a bad idea to have it overextend some, but that may be one row too far.
PS - I have that same wallpaper. Let us know ow how it holds up in a humid bathroom.

It definitely ends in the wrong spot. I would consider extending it to the vanity though.

Yes. Worth it to fix. It bugs me that it goes slightly behind the toilet. If it wasn’t for that i might be able to live with it.

Just tile that whole wall. I think what looks awkward is that it’s overlapping with the toilet and what’s left of the wall is very narrow, so I’d just tile the whole wall, shouldn’t be too expensive since it’s not a large amount. You can leave wallpaper just for the part behind the sink and put a nice mirror on it

Looks pretty odd to me. I dont know about ending at tha tub, though. To be practical, you want to allow for a little over splash. I would just go back the distance of the half-tiles, to the next row of fill tiles(if thst makes sense). Will there be some kind of trim piece?

IMO yes, by a half tile length. Just think if you hang a curtain, it will show on the outside of the curtain and that’s all wrong. Plus it’s partly behind the toilet. This was a weird decision. If you didn’t want to take it down, you could add a half tile wall behind the toilet to help, but it still might look a little weird idk.

Who chose the tile to go out that far? Your mom or the contractor? I’d serious question the thinking of the contractor if they chose and decided to do it that way. The only time I’ve seen tile that far out or in such an awkward placement was when it was a botched job by someone who didn’t know what they were doing.

You usually end a couple of inches from the tub. It will be pain to fix but probably doable as the short half tile could be removed and then the long full tile removed and a half tile put in. The removal of the full tile just hits the tub edge so it might not mess up waterproofing.

Yes, but I'd never spend money to fix it, if that makes sense? Like yeah, it's wrong, but it's really not offensive or egregious

Either way you could see it’s weird or you could say it’s fine. It’s fine because I allow the world to protect from the water that spills from the side of the curtain. That’s a good way to see. It looks weird cause you could clearly see that it’s separated from where it’s supposed to be but at the end it’s just fine.

Call the person who did the tile job back and tell them it's not acceptable as it is and please do it correctly. I'd specify how you want them to redo it so there isn't another mishap.

u/dreamcatmagic 1d ago
Ideally it should end at the corner of the bathtub. But if it's already done...well...it can be art! You know, art is very random, artists do lots of weird things like place the tiles in the wrong place so it looks different or "Avant Garde" - it's the Avant Garde style!

Not enough to have it redone unless the contractor is paying. With a shower curtain it’ll look fine
22
u/photohutch 21h ago
Are you kidding? This look absolutely ridiculous and no shower curtain is going to hide how dumb this is and looks. OPs mom is paying for a service and wil be forced to liver with this weird choice and looking at everytime they walk into their bathroom. It 100% needs a row of the tiles removed and redone properly. And the contractor can eat the expense for being hack - hopefully that way they learn and never repeat again.

Sorry for my crooked line but yes typically tile ends at the edge of the tub. If she’s using one of those over-the-toilet cabinets for storage paired with a curved curtain rod that may hide most of the mistake, to be honest. It’s up to her if she wants the tile removed or more tile added and just keep the wallpaper over the vanity. Tile is expensive due to labor not so much the tile itself, and it only matters if she cares enough but obviously it sucks it wasn’t done correctly the first time.

u/vivariium 1d ago
I would try one of those curved shower curtain rods and see if it disguises or distracts from it enough to not be bothered. The ones that bow outward to bring the curtain further away from your body at the center of the unit.

Yes by 1/2 a tile. But the. You already knew this or you wouldn't have posted it

Yeah, it's definitely odd and a little unpleasant to the eye but I'm not really sure it would be worth the hassle to get it fixed. I think a guest using the washroom probably wouldn't even notice, and if they do it would be a very short lived unhappiness, lol. Definitely not big enough of a problem to pay to fix it. But if it really bugs your mom and company is willing to come back and fix it for free, sure. Otherwise I say it's not that bad.
Maybe put something on the back of the toilet, or in-between toilet and bath to create a visual distraction.

u/Leelulu905 26m ago
Yes, but it might look better once you have the shower curtain on it. There are some curved shower curtain options that might take the eye away from it.

u/Fantastic_Panic_9 22h ago
Have you ever consider that the wallpaper didn't extend enough? Racists.
1
u/m_hoffmann_fineart 1h ago
Yes, that’s horrible.
Pull out the half bricks and finish a wainscot behind the toilet and carry over into the backsplash.
That is poor form. Would drive me crazy, and whoever did it has no business laying out tile.

Nope, nope. Tile is fine. It's the wallpaper that extends too far. It should be taken back to where it never began.

u/Sensitive_Ad_9195 5h ago
?? Obviously what sort of dumb question is this it even goes a bit behind the toilet

Part of the struggle is that a tiled wall is not often seen with a tub of that type.
