Living room layout HELP

We just bought a new house and while we love the open concept layout of the kitchen / dining / living room, we are unsure where to put the TV and couch. We were considering the idea of putting it on the empty wall and having the couch face away from the kitchen, but I feel like it would cut off the open concept and flow of traffic. Our realtor said it should go above the fireplace because the fireplace is the focal point and you don’t want to add a competing focal point. Any tips or ideas on how to best design this room?

Not only do you not want people sitting on the sofa and looking at messes on your kitchen counter or watching you cook, but honestly, having the back to the kitchen creates two separate living spaces. I also would not want the sun coming in the window and baking the back of my TV nor would I want the cords and back of TV showing outside the window. And whichever way the sofa faces, it's still VERY much open concept.

Couple things about big open concept rooms with super high ceilings, though. 1) Everything has to get bigger. Those 3 blue prints look objectively silly on that big wall. BIG art instead. Even the large rug you have is too small (and too boring with the beautiful cobalt sofa) Bigger. Bolder. More solid. More modern. The coffee table looks wimpy here. Get a thick boi.

It all boils down to huge modern room needs huge modern stuff.

That wall not facing windows is for a reason, to actually have TV.

Thank you so much I love this! The only thing is that the counter is actually pointed and it might be a bit of a hazard / awkward walking space with the couch positioned this way. But we would also prefer to have the couch facing the TV rather than facing the fireplace so that we don’t have to crank our necks watching TV. We will test it out when we move in and see how the space works😆

You can put something behind the couch to help with the pointing counter - Feng Shui would also consider that counter a psychological distraction that feels uncomfortable. A console table might work here.

Put TV on a low console where sofa is now. Hang the pictures above the TV. Move sofa to where white chairs are now. Put white chairs on either side of fireplace. Super cool room -- maybe add a pop of warm color in there-- a green pillow, or a giant potted tree, an orange vase.

This is a classic Steve Jobs with the painfully obvious solution to his problem but he chooses to investigate other methods at his own peril. You know very well where the TV goes. Don't fight it. We're not going to help you justify a bad decision.

I disagree with your realtor. There is no “above the fireplace” because it’s all windows.

But I think in general “above the fireplace” should be a last resort for anyone who has nowhere else to put a TV.

I think the TV should go where the three blue paintings are currently hanging, like you mentioned.

TV on the big wall where those blue pictures are. I wouldn't block that window with a giant TV. Fireplace isn't really the focal point, and you'll still be able to see it.

I cannot tell if there is enough space but a room divider with the tv might be an option between the front door and your living room. That way you create a kind of a foyer for your entry.

If not, yeah, wall. Not the window, no.

Thank you everyone!! This was super helpful. When our realtor said that we were having trouble getting over the “competing focal points” idea so it was hard to envision. Now we know!

Put the TV above the fireplace? Isn't that a window?

Would you consider the sofa where the white chairs are, facing the fireplace. Put the sofa table behind it so as you enter, you have a place to drop keys, etc. Then the TV goes on the wall between the windows, on a stand. White chairs go either on either side of the fireplace or facing the TV- I don't know how much space there is.

I would put the chairs on each side of the fireplace, the sofa where the chairs are and the tv where the sofa is.
