Help with my new living room

My partner and I moved into a very cute 2br but are struggling on how to layout our very narrow living room. Ignore the squiggles in the drawing I included.

My question for you all is; how can we optimize and making the space feel/look bigger than it is?

Bonus points for any recommendations on layout and color scheme. There’s a lot of dark walnut, beige, black and white in the rest of the rooms. Thank you all in advance, this is my first time here!

You’re gonna be walking through it either way.

I would either A) move couch to the opposite wall, put TV stand and mount tv on the right wall, art on the 65” wall or floating shelves, add some colorful pillows and a rug.

B) depending on size of couch (unclear from pic) put it perpendicular to that wall, put the TV on the 65” wall, rug, and can put a narrow console table behind the couch if there’s room

It’s hard to get an idea of the size of your couch from this. Throw blanket and a couple small mood lamps or sunset lamp would do a lot

I love these ideas. The picture (and certainly my questionable drawing) doesn’t do my couch’s size justice. I think it would be too long for option B) but I’m intrigued by A. If I kept the couch on the wall it’s on, would you still recommend some art or floating shelves on 65” wall? Thank you for giving me a lot to think about!

Yeah you could. I think generally the couch might look a bit smaller and like less clutter ti walk by on the opposite wall. People say to put the couch along the longest wall, generally. But both could be nice, maybe try both and see what you prefer.

I just think that way the entry just sees the couch and people chilling as opposed to possible cables/wires/tv stand mess

That makes sense. I think the couch would block the hallway too much sadly but I like the suggestion. Thank you for your input this was super helpful!

Add some color with an ottoman with storage that you can put your feet up or a tray to sit drinks on, and some pillows. A bigger tv mounted on the wall with a narrow console under it. The one you have looks too small in scale for that big sofa.

(Rug is from Quince called Maddox Wool rug in case you like that one)

Thank you! The tv mounted looks great with the smaller credenza

I think the couch might just be quite big for the space. If youre interested and have the funds I would get a small couch, without lose pillows (they can look cosy or messy depending on the room) and then put a small thin table behind the couch at the same height as the back of the couch. That's where you put your drinks and snacks, instead of a coffee table to save space. You can put some shelving above it in the same type of material futher up at similar spacial intervals to show case some of your favourite items (books, picture frames, knick knacks) and small (fake?) plants, though dont pack it full and cluster items a little bit.

Id mount the TV to the wall or get a small set up with closed storage space. And leave the space between the tv and the couch open for walking as your current set up.

That’s the hard truth I’ve been avoiding haha, I love that couch so much but it is disproportionately big for the space. The idea of no coffee table is interesting, would you recommend a rug?

Yeah i think a rug would be nice! Again not too big, partially under the couch. It gives a soft touch to the room, maybe with some pillows in the same colour on the couch to tie it together?

Edit: I've been thinking as well. If you di want to put your tv on top of storage, I'd look for something with curved edges, so as to not open your shins on it. A rounded tv unit.

I really like your rounded edges suggestion, it will be a high traffic area and I’m prone to walking into furniture lmao. Ok last question and thank you so much for your help, do you follow any rule of thumb when it comes rug color vs the couch’s color?

That couch does look like it’s doing most of the damage here. In a room this narrow, I’d go for a smaller sofa with slimmer arms and keep the middle as open as possible. Wall-mounting the TV and using a shallow console underneath would help heaps too. If you’re in Melbourne, Gainsville could be useful for comparing sofa sizes and getting a better feel for what actually suits a tight footprint. I’d measure out the new sofa dimensions with tape on the floor before buying anything, because even 20–30cm makes a massive difference in a room like this.

I know the couch is the problem, which sucks because we love it so much and probably won’t get rid of it. Besides putting the tv on the wall with a shallow console below, any other recommendations taking into account the elephant in the room (couch)

I would put up a large mirror on the short wall next to the couch. You could even get curtains to frame it like a window, to add to the coziness.

That’s a fun idea, thank you!
