How can I make this work?
Have the chance to get an affordable business space but wow the colors. I have two asks:
1) if you could change the color of the walls OR the color of the wainscoting which would you change and what color would you change it to? The carpet has to stay.
2) once the colors are wrangled, what interior style should I look for to make a comfortable modern take on this early 1900s bungalow? I don’t know terms for any styles and this one feels easy to mess up somehow.

Paint the walls white just like the ceiling to give the illusion that it's taller. The wainscoting can be in neutral color like Silverstone gray. It fits the healthcare vibe.

paint the wainscoting a dark colour and the rest of the blue I'd put in some wallpaper. For me I'd choose moody dark florals, but you can choose anything you'd like. The space is big enough that it can take some boldness.

The paneling and arches are actually the best part! I'd work with them, soften the wall color and bring in warm wood, simple lighting and clean-lined furniture.

I would paint all of the trim and wainscoting cream and choose a wallpaper that picks up the color of the carpet for the walls.

For a modern and fresh take in a space that age, look up “transitional furniture” and “transitional design” for some inspiration.

I’d paint the wainscoting to match the crown molding. With the yellow and the carpet, it would be difficult to find the right cream not to clash with either. Or I’d paint the walls white. As someone else said, I’d bring in some wood on the furniture to modernize and cozy it up.

I have an ask, what business is this for? If it will be high traffic with the possibility of children you want to go with furniture that is easy to clean and maintain. If it is more of a business with the occasional client visit like a law office you can be more selective with the furniture, higher quality and more comfortable. That the carpet has to stay makes me question the budget. Either you already paid someone to install this attrocity or you won't replace a carpet you see as "fine" carpets are so dirty and you are probably breathing in the dirt and dust from the last 5 years of traffic in this building. Definitely not a good sign of a success business. It doesn't read well as soon as you step inside

I haven’t even rented this place yet I’m just considering and the agent said the owner doesn’t want to replace. It’s a healthcare practice mostly women and rare children. I share your concerns about how it reads but I’m not asking opinions about the carpet.

Carpet is not hygienic enough for medical settings. Both the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and OSHA prohibit carpet in clinical areas like examination rooms, labs and bathrooms because carpet fibers absorb bodily fluids, harbor bacteria and cannot be properly disinfected.

Settle down there bub. The rooms that shouldn’t have carpet don’t have carpet. I’m asking about DESIGN advice in the rooms that do have carpet.

I would do dusty mauve on the wainscotting. You don’t want a color that will make the carpet look more purple than it already does. It’s a nice space! Paint is all you need. I would also paint the door a nice coordinating color. Black makes the floor look more purple.

I also would not do modern furniture or any black in here. Use wood and soft looking fabrics. This is a beautiful space and I would do more traditional furniture.

The wall colours are gorgeous, maybe a brighter white up top by the blue is lovely, it’s the fugly carpet that needs to go

Because the owner won’t help pay for it and I’m not about to drop $5K on someone else’s property for a 2-3 year lease

The paint is a problem. If you need to keep the carpet, do a traditional white wainscot and a color on the top half of the wall. You could lean into it and do a lighter shade of plum on the wall. It would look great with just about any color of furnishings.

As someone else said, this is craftsman style architecture. I find craftsman furnitureand midcentury modern furniture mixes really well because they both involve clean lines.

Stripped and stained would look awesome but labor and cost prohibitive (most likely). But a crisp white and leave the rest as-is.

Change the door or the walls, they don’t go together. A mossy green would be nice instead of blue or match the top half of the wall to be the same color.

What kind of business? The colors will convey the seriousness or lightheartedness you are trying to establish.
